Experiment 1: Accessing Solution container

Question 1: Is there any difference between a glass container and a plastic container?

20240222_163642

We start with a very basic question. Is there any difference between a container made out of glass and one made out of plastic?

As shown in the picture above, in our lab we have two types of containers. One made out of glass and another one made out of plastic.

We want to make sure that choosing between the two should not affect the result of the experiment.

Methodology

To answer this question. I will

  1. Measure empty Glass vs Plastic
  2. Measure tap water in Glass vs Plastic

Configuration

Hardware

  • Laser: 785mm
  • Power: 10/0.71/(A)/358 (W)
  • Lens: 10x
  • Front entrance slit: 0.25 mm

  • Acq. time (s): 360
  • Accumulation: 1
  • Grating: 600

Experiment/Measurement

We start the experiment by deciding that the laser placement must not change. Throughout the experiment, the placement of the super head is strictly set at $x = 10.0$, $y = 16.0$ and $z = 37.6$. Thus, when the container is filled with water such that the height of the water is equal, the focus of the laser will be around 1 cm under the water surface. Please note that the placement is relative to the origin point set at our lab.

The height of the water is decided using the 25 ml mark on the glass container. Then, we eyeballed the height of the plastic container to match the other one.

After we set these parameters, both containers are clean and dry for the empty measurement.

Measurement

The steps of measurement are as follows

  1. Measuring System Noise
  2. Measuring External Noise
  3. Measuring Empty Glass
  4. Measuring Empty Plastic
  5. Measuring Glass with Water
  6. Measuring Plastic with Water
