What does an emultimedia record represent?

A multimedia record is the place to link external files to EMu and add data about the files that make them searchable. These files can include things like images, videos, word docs, pdfs, etc. They do not include URLs or documents that are published and available through the bibliography module.

A Multimedia record is the combination of one asset (one master file, URL [for anything other than published documents, which belong in a Bibliography record], or file reference) and the metadata about that asset. Metadata describes the asset itself -- e.g., technical details about an image file and how it was created, not details about the subject depicted in the image. Information about a Multimedia record’s subject/s and context is reflected through its attachment to other modules (e.g., Catalogue, Taxonomy, Events, etc).

If a Multimedia record represents a digitized version of physical multimedia (e.g., photographic film, analog recordings), the Multimedia record should only describe the digital file. Details about the physical media belong in the Catalogue record for the physical object. See Library/Photo Archives Catalogue standards

Born Digital Museum Collections and the Multimedia Module Emultimedia is the home HUB module for collections which are born digital. Examples include the Photo Archives Department Collection. For these units of the museum ecatalogue has a secondary role and is where documentation of physical objects (film, specimen, artefact etc.) related to the media asset is done. Connection to the physical object is made on the multimedia tab of the catalogue record.

Record Structure:

Flat, Network, or Hierarchical; Most Multimedia records have a flat structure -- e.g., a stand-alone image asset with no derivatives. Multimedia can have a network structure to associate assets and URL or storage-references -- e.g., a URL record for the published location of a multimedia asset can be associated with that asset’s Multimedia record. Multimedia records can have hierarchical (parent/child) structure for derivatives (e.g., A record for a full-resolution CT dataset is the parent of a derivative lower-resolution dataset.)
