BBQ'in on A Budget
Not everyone has around 200 to drop on a BBQ computer. For sure, we get that. So that's why SmokeHousePi has a various project types for all types of budgets ranging from the most economical (minimum project) to the "full-monty" where we are talking mouth watering, fall off the bone, data-enabled, kick-your feet up, smoked slice of heaven.
The Minimalist
Getting started with the minimalist might be for budget reasons, it might be because you are still a purist, but phone enabled tempature gauge sounds nice, or perhaps you are thinking this whole open source thing is fun and all - but really? am I going to shell out some cash for some crazy "BBQ-node-bot", really?
To get started with "The Minimalist"
- Load up your Raspberry Pi (rPi) with the smokehousePi software (see the installation guide) and connect it to your wifi.
- Setup the temp probe (See Getting Started with the Temp Probes)
- When your SmokeHousePi lights turn green, try going to
smokehousepi.local
or192.168.24.1
from here you will be able to watch the temp from anywhere in the house including your bed.
The Half-Monty
Getting started with the Half-Monty. At around $130 cost the Half-Monty is already a more capable BBQ Computer for about half the price. Compared to Other "Digital BBQ" systems, it is also way easier to use, and is ready to be BFF with our phone. The Half-Monty enables the world of automation to work for you - and your food. The half-monty with the fan, and potentially other controls allows your cooker to not only "see" that the temp is not where it should be, but to course correct - adjusting the temp so that it can be on par with the target temp.
To get started with "Half-Monty"
- Load up your Raspberry Pi (rPi) with the smokehousePi software (see the installation guide) and connect it to your wifi.
- Setup the rPi in the case, and connect the temp probes, and fan (See Connecting Half Monty Sensors)
- When your SmokeHousePi lights turn green, try going to
smokehousepi.local
or192.168.24.1
from here you will be able to watch the temp from anywhere in the house including your bed.
The Full-Monty
Wow. When you do something you go-all-out. We like that. Can we be friends? The Full Monty
is the coolest way to get good at BBQ. In fact with the Full Monty you might have to try to be bad at BBQ. Like the Midas of BBQ Smoke
.
To get started with "Full-Monty"
- The setup is very similar to the
Half-Monty
- except that you are adding the LCD screen. - Instead of looking at the lights like some technician, you read the LCD display, with style and sophistication. The LCD tells you how to connect to your
SmokeHousePi
based on your wifi situation, and it will show useful read outs so that you don't even have to get your phone out of your pocket (for those 30 minutes when you are working on your mindfulness)
