Assignment #3: Part One - Illustrator Tutorial

We will be using Adobe Illustrator this semester to create 2-dimensional drawings for use with the laser cutter (which we will learn about next week). Illustrator is also a great tool for all types of vector drawing, and may be used in other projects through the semester and your career.

To begin learning the program, watch the tutorials below and follow along:

  1. Illustrator User Interface
  2. Pen Tool - You can download the corresponding pen tool guide PDF here
  3. Layers Palette

Assignment #3: Part Two - 2D CAD Drawing of Mechanical Toy

Using your 2D hand drawing from last week, select a side view that has the most detail, and create a 2D drawing of it within Illustrator. If there is a dimension you don't have on your hand drawing, you can go back to your original toy and take a measurement using your calipers. The goal of this assignment is to familiarize yourself with the pen tool.

  • Create a layer called "Drawing" and a layer called "Titleblock." Place all of your drawing lines on the "Drawing" layer and include a simple titleblock on the "Titleblock" layer with your name, the toy's name, the date and class name.
  • Use at least 3 lineweights in your drawing by adjusting the stroke weights. Lineweights help to effectively communicate edges, details and the overall shape of your object. Take a look at some of the examples in this document for reference.
  • If there is a shape or type of line you need to produce and you haven't learned it yet, use Google and research what technique can help you achieve it.
  • After you have completed your sketch with as much detail as needed to accurately depict your toy, go to File -> Export -> Export As... and save your files as type DWG. (DWG files are an older file format originally for use with 2D CAD drawings. They are a great format for sending line drawings between programs and we will be using them with certain fabrication machines.)
  • DM me your final .dwg file as "A3_[name]_[toy name]" on Slack before the beginning of class on 09/23.

Below is an example drawing of the train toy. Feel free to include more detail than this as well.
