Flavor - ennvina/spellactivationoverlay GitHub Wiki

A flavor is a specific packaging, one for each audience.

Support

The addon currently supports the following flavors:

Other flavors

There is no flavor for the Burning Crusade Classic, although the addon partially supports it. Such flavor could be officially supported in a relatively short amount of time and effort, if the effort is justified by enough demand.

Season of Discovery introduced runes to Classic Era. Because players who play Season of Discovery are playing under the same installation as Classic Era, there is no dedicated "Season of Discovery" flavor. The Vanilla flavor includes code for both unseasoned Classic Era and Season of Discovery.

Packaging

Each flavor has its own packaging, allowing players to download an addon with no more files than what they need. An exception to this rule is Classic Era players who do not play Season of Discovery but still need to download files associated to it, as mentioned earlier in this article.

Vanilla

Vanilla packaging removes code related to Death Knight because there is no such class yet.

Wrath of the Lich King

Wrath packaging has no specific setup.

Cataclysm

Cataclysm packaging removes some spell alert textures because they are already embedded in native game files.

The packaging also removes the generic spell alert sound, already embedded in native game files.

Re-inventing effects

The SpellActivationOverlay functionality was introduced in Cataclysm. Because of that, effects prior to Cataclysm had to be invented. This is especially true for overlays.

Ideally, an effect has not changed at all throughout its entire lifespan, in which case its texture and position can be re-used. This is by far the easiest situation to work with.

Sometimes, however, there is either no such effect in Modern WoW, or the effect has changed significantly since then. In this case, some freedom was necessary to propose effects to this newfound land. It may cause some discrepancies, such as having different visuals for different flavors for the same effect. There is no perfect solution to this. Even Blizzard Entertainement has to deal with it every other expansion.
