NeoGeo Red Warning Fix - eniva/MisSTer_Guides GitHub Wiki

THIS IS NOW FIXED IN THE LATEST NEOGEO CORE.

THIS GUIDE IS NO LONGER NECESSARY. YAY!

ORIGINAL GUIDE (for archive purposes):

If you get the notorious RED WARNING SCREEN OF DOOM on the MiSTer Neo Geo core, it's likely that you are trying to use MVS (Arcade).

Without discussing the advantages of playing on the arcade version, let's go straight to how to get around this doom.

Sadly, you have to do this for every Neo Geo game you have this problem with. Not all Neo Geo games have this problem, but some do like Metal Slug 2. Once you are done, however, you do not to have to do this ever for that game! Hooray!

Why do we need this?

There is a bad workaround where you can set the AES on the OSD and set to MVS via UNIBIOS. If you do this, you cannot save your DIP switch settings (stuff like blood violence and difficulty changes).

With this fix, you will be able to do that, and keep those settings forever! AS an added bonus, the drug warning screen will no longer display corrupted because drugs are bad!

Please note that you need to follow these steps very carefully. If not, you have to do this from step one all over again.

STEPS FOR THE FIX

Prerequisites

  1. Make sure you do not have anything saved for the game. If you do, you have to delete it on your SD (saves/NEOGEO/.sav).
  2. Have Universal BIOS. v3.3 is used for this guide.

When Something Goes Wrong

If something doesn't look right, or simply doesn't work, you have to delete your save and start from the beginning again. After everything is cleared, make sure you boot up the NeoGeo core from another other core (or the main menu). Resetting the core will not work!

Procedure

  1. Boot up that awesome NeoGeo core. Do not load any ROMs!
  2. Make sure your controller is mapped for this core.
  3. In the MiSTer OSD menu, set System Type to "ARCADE(MVS)", and BIOS to "UNIBIOS".
  4. Now load your game, but make sure you're holding down A + B + C.
  5. When you first boot your game (no saves), if you held the buttons down correctly, it should enter, what's known as "GENERAL BIOS" mode. To verify this, on the bottom right it should say "[MV-1x]". If not, your save wasn't deleted properly or the System Type was not set properly.
  6. Go to "GENERAL BIOS SETTINGS".
  7. Set "Enable Arcade Protect" on so it stays CHECKED. This setting should be OFF for some games like Pulstar. You will be reminded again at the last step.
  8. Open the MiSTer OSD menu and set "DIP:SETTINGS:" to "ON". Close the OSD.
  9. Press C to Exit the UNIBIOS setting.
  10. Now you should be at another BIOS SETTING. Go to "SETTING UP THE SOFT DIP" and then choose "SLOT1 ".
  11. Change whatever stuff you want to do here. These are the settings that will be saved. Once you're done, open the MiSTer OSD menu and set "DIP:SETTINGS:" to "OFF".
  12. Press C to go back to the previous setting in the BIOS until you see "EXIT". Now let's exit.
  13. Now hold SELECT + START together. An In-Game Menu should pop up momentarily.
  14. Select "PATCH MEMORY".
  15. Change the value to "0x00 0x3A001D", then move your highlighting cursor (white) to the right until "PATCH" turns white. Press C to EXIT.
  16. Select "PATCH MEMORY" again.
  17. This time, change the value to "0x00 0xD00101", then move to right again until "PATCH" turns white. Press C to EXIT.
  18. Press C to Exit the "In-Game Menu".
  19. Open the MiSTer OSD menu again, and "SAVE MEMORY CARD" to save all of this hard work. Pew.
  20. Congratulations! You will never see that stupid red warning again and keep your DIP settings.
  21. If you still get the warning screen, delete your save file for the game and start from the beginning, but SKIP step 6 & 7.

Enjoy!
