How do I refuel the elytra?

There are two ways.

Fast way

  1. Get some Firework Rockets (without Firework Stars). Around a stack or two is fine, but you can use less.
  2. Unequip your Aerobatic Elytra and hold it in your offhand slot.
  3. Hold the Firework Rockets in your main hand.
  4. Make sure you are pointing at the open air (not looking at any block/entity).
  5. Hold shift to sneak (and again ensure you are pointing at the open air).
  6. Press right click (use) to refuel the Aerobatic Elytra in your offhand, consuming the entire stack of rockets held in your main hand (or as much as can be used).

If the blue charge indicators in your Aerobatic Elytra went up, congratulations, you have refueled your elytra.

Slow way (automatable)

  1. Place your Aerobatic Elytra in a Crafting Bench, with some Firework Rockets on top.
  2. Apply the recipe. (Your elytra will preserve any enchantments/customization it had)
  3. Re-apply the recipe as many times as you want to refuel the elytra.

[!NOTE] Using Firework Rockets with larger Flight Duration is more cost-efficient for refueling Aerobatic Elytra.

[!WARNING] If you are playing Creative Mode on Minecraft 1.19.2 or earlier, you won't be able to use the Firework rockets from the Creative Menu to refuel the elytra. Get paper and gunpowder from the Creative Menu and place them together in any shape within a Crafting Bench to craft valid Firework rockets.

This was fixed in Minecraft 1.19.3.

[!WARNING] If you are playing Creative Mode, there is a bug in Minecraft Forge that erases any and all abilities of an Aerobatic Elytra if you move it around within any inventory in Creative Mode when connected to a dedicated server. In particular, this sets its MaxFuel ability to 0, making the Elytra impossible to refuel.

To avoid this problem, do not move Aerobatic Elytras within inventories in Creative Mode (this includes (un)equipping it).

To fix this problem if your elytra became broken, you can use Shulker shells in the same way as Firework Rockets to increase the elytra's MaxFuel ability, or use the /aerobaticelytra ability set command to manually edit the elytra's abilities.

[!NOTE] The recipes that make this refueling possible can be edited by datapacks/modpacks. Check your modpack/datapack documentation for specific instructions on how to refuel if that is the case. If you have JEI installed, you will be able to browse any recipes that apply to your Aerobatic Elytra, including the upgrade recipes which are applied as described above.
