Smelter - einsteinsci/betterbeginnings GitHub Wiki

The smelter is a type of furnace used to smelt ores into their respective products, and is usually the third type of furnace the player will craft. Ore blocks go in the upper left slot, fuel in the bottom slot, and some kind of "booster" in the upper right slot (such as gravel). Nearly all smelter recipes require at least one of the "booster" provided in order to smelt the ores. More valuable ores require more of the booster to smelt.

##Boosters Which item the player uses as a booster will affect how likely the smelter is to double ores. More expensive boosters will increase the chance and amount of the product received. The tier of smelter you use and the smelting recipe will affect this too. Smelting with gravel in the normal smelter will never increase the amount of product received; you will always get the normal amount from the input.

A list of the boost levels of all the booster items is provided below:

Item Boost Amount Doubling Chance in Smelter
Gravel +0.0 0%
Soul Sand +0.3 30%
Quartz +1.0 100%
Prismarine +1.25 25% chance to triple, doubles otherwise

Boosters are fully customizeable through JSON loading (1.8 only).

##Fuel The smelter needs charcoal as fuel. Wood fuels and regular coal won't suffice; they're not quite refined enough. Unlike the regular kiln and brick oven, the smelter can also use blaze rods and lava as fuel.

There is a config option to allow regular coal to be used as fuel in a smelter in addition to charcoal (1.8 only).

###Gravel Gravel is normally fairly common in the world, but not necessarily common enough to fill the needs of a miner with several stacks of iron and gold ore. You can create gravel by breaking stone or cobblestone with a Rock Hammer. This can be a fairly time-consuming task, but so is mining.

##Ore Dictionary Currently, the smelter automatically adds recipes for the following mod ores: copper, tin, aluminum, silver, lead, platinum ("shiny"), nickel ("ferrous"), ruby, sapphire, and olivine. Further compatibility is planned for the 1.0 update.
