Tasks Board Stopped Taking Clicks - edmozley/freeitsm GitHub Wiki

The tasks board stopped taking clicks after closing a task

Reported by a user ยท Fixed in #1839 ยท Released in 2.3.1

What you saw

Reported as: "open a task, delete it, and now I cannot click any other task - a refresh fixes it."

The board looked completely normal. Every card was where it should be, nothing was greyed out, and hovering behaved as usual. Clicks simply did nothing. Reloading the page put it right, until the next time.

What was actually wrong

Not the delete. That was the reporter's reasonable guess and it sent the investigation in the wrong direction for a while - it happened on any close in that view, including the X, clicking the overlay and pressing Escape. It never happened in the default drawer view, which is why it looked like something specific to deleting.

Tasks can open in two ways: a drawer that slides in from the side, and a large window that sits over the board. They share one element and one close function.

closeDetailPanel() removes the open class but leaves as-modal on the element. That matters because the two views hide themselves differently:

  • the drawer slides itself off the screen (translateX(100%)), so it genuinely goes away
  • the large window hides with opacity: 0 alone

An element at opacity: 0 is invisible and still there. The closed window was lying across 94% of the viewport - top/bottom: 3vh; left/right: 3vw - at z-index: 1000 with pointer-events: auto.

So it was an invisible sheet over the board, quietly taking every click. And only a page reload cleared it, because as-modal is added on open and never removed.

๐Ÿ”‘ Invisible is not absent. opacity: 0, visibility: visible and a live pointer-events is a fully interactive element you cannot see.

How it was fixed

The closed window is hidden with visibility: hidden and pointer-events: none, both restored on .open. It now genuinely stops being there rather than merely stopping being visible.

File What changed
assets/css/tasks.css a closed large window is hidden and takes no clicks (?v=31, bumped on all five pages that load it)

How it was proved

By hit-testing rather than by reading the CSS - asking the browser what is actually at a point on the board, with elementFromPoint():

  • closed drawer, closed window and open window all measured
  • with a no-panel control that must not block
  • and an open-window control that must - which is the one that proves the fix did not simply switch the panel off
