Connectivity Troubleshooting

Under normal circumstances, you should have no problem connecting to VTube Studio. There also should be no delay, lag, or hiccups/spikes. The streaming should be smooth and should have at most around 10 milliseconds of delay.

However, depending on your local network setup, you may encounter some issues. If you're having trouble connecting your smartphone to the PC app (the mobile app is stuck on "Connecting…" or the server scan doesn't find anything), try going through these common solutions:

Firewall & Antivirus Issues

  • Check if your firewall is blocking the connection. In 90% of cases, this is what causes connectivity (and other) problems.
    • To test this, temporarily turn off your built-in firewall (Windows Defender) and any additional network security software you have. If this fixes the issue, turn them back on and add an exception for VTube Studio.exe.

Note: Even if you've already added VTube Studio to your firewall exceptions in the past, you may have to do so again after downloading an update.

Network Issues

  • Check that both devices (PC/Mac and smartphone) are on the same network. If your PC and/or smartphone are connected to your router via cable, that's fine too.
    • If your router has multiple WiFi networks available, make sure you're using the same one for your PC and smartphone. Also, try each network.
  • On Windows, make sure the network you're using is set to Private.
  • Turn off mobile data on your smartphone. If it's on, VTube Studio may report the wrong IP.
  • If you're using a VPN, see if there's an option related to "Invisible to Devices" switched on.
  • Check your router settings. Sometimes there are privacy settings activated that prevent devices from discovering each other.
  • Network extending devices and access points like Google Nest may cause problems.

Other Issues

  • Make sure iOS/Android and the app are up to date.
  • If "Updates" are shown as 0, restart the app once.
  • If your smartphone can't detect your PC at all, there are issues with your network setup. To test this, use a network discovery/ping app and let them run a discovery on your network. Any "Network Scanner" app available on your smartphone's app store should work.
  • The Steam version of VTube Studio may sometimes report the wrong server IP. To check this, run either ipconfig in your Windows command terminal or ifconfig en0 in your macOS terminal. If the terminal shows IPs not listed in VTube Studio, try all of them in the smartphone app.

Network Lag Troubleshooting

If you experience lag or short breaks/freezes when streaming to PC, try the following solutions:

  • Restart your router.
  • If you're on WiFi, make sure you're using 5GHz WiFi and not 2.4 GHz. Depending on your environment, 2.4 GHz WiFi can have wildly unstable latency.
    • On WiFi, the latency still shouldn’t be higher than 10 milliseconds.
  • Use a wired LAN connection instead of WiFi. You can use a LAN connection on your smartphone by plugging in an Ethernet adapter such as this one for Android (USB-C) or this one for iPhone/iPad.
  • Try changing the WiFi channel your router is using.
  • If the above solutions don't work, try out ping/network analyzer apps from your smartphone app store to analyze the network connection between your smartphone and PC. This can help you understand when/why the freezing occurs.

macOS/iOS-specific Network Issues

macOS and iOS users can also try the following to fix lag issues:

  • Turn off location services. This guide explains how to turn location services off.
  • If you're on WiFi, remove all unused WiFi networks from your list of known networks on both iPhone and Mac to prevent them from scanning for them constantly. This guide explains how to do so.
  • Turn off AirDrop on the Macbook.
    • To turn off AirDrop, open your console and run the following: sudo ifconfig awdl0 down
    • To turn AirDrop back on after you're done streaming, run the following: sudo ifconfig awdl0 up
  • Turn off Bluetooth on your Mac and iPhone. You can follow this guide to turn off Bluetooth on your Mac.

VTS Lag Troubleshooting

If you experience lag in VTube Studio itself, first try rebooting your PC to see if that resolves the issue. If not, the following solutions may help:

Run VTube Studio as an Administrator

Starting VTube Studio as admin will allow VTube Studio to set its GPU priority to "high," which should prevent other GPU-hungry programs from making it lag.

  1. Locate the VTube Studio.exe application file by right clicking VTube Studio in your Steam games list and choosing Manage -> Browse Local Files to open the parent directory.
  2. Right click VTube Studio.exe, open the "Properties" menu, and navigate to the "Compatibility" tab.
  3. Under "Settings," check the box next to "Run this program as an administrator," then press "Apply" and "OK" to save your settings.

VTube Studio should now run as admin every time it starts, regardless of whether you're starting it with or without Steam. This fix may also address other issues, such as hotkeys not working when VTS is not in focus.

Set GPU Priority for VTS (NVIDIA ONLY)

If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you can set VTube Studio to have GPU priority. This can help if you have a game running simultaneously with VTS and the game is taking up all the GPU resources. In a future update VTube Studio will automatically set itself to have GPU priority, but currently you must manually activate this setting every time you start the program.

You can find the "Set GPU Priority" button in the Settings menu, under General Settings & External Connections -> General Configuration.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/ebikatsudon/VTubeStudio/img/nvidia_gpu_priority_mode.png

Check the Error Log

Press the orange Log button in the main menu and see if there are any error messages. Occasionally something may break in VTS and result in the log being spammed with error messages every frame, causing the app to slow down. If this happens to you, please bring it up in the VTube Studio Discord.

You can also see the full logs by checking the text files in the "Logs" folder next to your "Live2DModels" folder in the VTube Studio directory.

Disable "Performance Improvement" Apps

Apps like MSI AfterBurner may actually cause performance/framerate issues in some cases. Turn them all off and see if that resolves your lag issues. If it does, see if you can add VTube Studio as an exception to those apps.

Some other apps that can cause lagging/freezing are RTSS Rivatuner and Game Fire. Additionally, if you have Norton/BullGuard installed, make sure the "Game Optimizer" settings are off.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/ebikatsudon/VTubeStudio/img/norton_game_optimizer.png

Check Your Security Software

If you're running an antivirus or other security software, make sure VTS is added as an exception. Some anti-malware programs can cause VTS to run very slowly, so try deactivating them temporarily and see if that helps. One anti-malware app that is known to cause issues for VTS is "IObit Malware Fighter."

Note: If you have FS Protection or F-Secure, make sure to add VTube Studio as an exception. These antiviruses are known to cause PC crashes when launching VTube Studio.

Check CPU/GPU Usage

Check your actual CPU/GPU usage in Windows Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + ESC). If your total CPU or GPU usage is close to 100%, see which programs are using the most resources. If it's a game you're running and not VTS itself, you may have to adjust the game's settings so your PC can handle running it and VTube Studio at the same time.

If the CPU/GPU usage is not near 100%, there may be some other issues unrelated to performance.

Turn Off Virtual Webcam and NDI

If you're not using NDI or the Virtual Webcam as a source in OBS, make sure they're both turned off in the VTS Settings. Having both on at the same time will cause performance issues and lag. You can toggle both of them off by going to Settings -> Webcam, Tracking, Video & Visual Settings -> Virtual Webcam Config/NDI.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/ebikatsudon/VTubeStudio/img/virtual-webcam-ndi.png

If you're using either the Virtual Webcam or NDI but the performance impact is too much, try using a normal Game Capture in OBS instead.

Turn off NVIDIA G-Sync

NVIDIA G-Sync can cause issues, especially on multi-monitor setups.

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel from the menu.
  2. Click on the + next to Display.
  3. Select Set up G-SYNC (some displays may not have this option)
  4. Uncheck the box next to Enable G-SYNC.

Lower the Game FPS

If you're playing a game, try limiting the game FPS to 60 if possible, or at the very least make sure the framerate isn't set to unlimited. You can also try limiting the FPS directly in the NVIDIA Control Panel if the game doesn't have an FPS setting.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/ebikatsudon/VTubeStudio/img/fps_setting_nvidia_control_panel.png

Set the FPS Through Your GPU Driver

Sometimes VTube Studio will ignore the FPS value set by the user, causing it to run uncapped. As an alternative, you can set a fixed FPS value in your GPU driver. If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you can use the Nvidia Control Panel to set a fixed FPS limit for applications.

Turn Off "Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling"

Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling can cause issues when running a game and VTube Studio at the same time. Try turning it off to see if it resolves the lag.

  1. On Windows, press Windows key + i to open Windows Settings.
  2. Navigate to System -> Display -> Graphics Settings.
  3. Toggle Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling OFF. Restart your PC to apply your changes.

Note: If you don't see this option, then your GPU doesn't support this feature.

Limit the VTS Framerate

If you have VSync on and use high-refresh-rate monitors, VTube Studio may be running at a very high FPS, causing performance issues when running games at the same time. You can check the actual render FPS for VTube Studio by opening the logs.

Try limiting VTube Studio to 1/2 Refresh Rate or 60 FPS. The FPS setting is under Settings -> Webcam, Tracking, Video & Visual Settings -> Quality and Effects -> Application FPS.

Generally, it's recommended to always run VTS at 60 FPS. This may cause screen tearing in the app, but that will not show up in your OBS capture/stream/recording.

Disable Game Overlays

Steam Overlay is known to cause framerate issues for some users. Please refer to the Steam website for how to disable it.

Other software like UPlay has also been shown to cause issues for some users.

Launch VTube Studio Without Steam

Try starting VTube Studio outside of Steam using the start_without_steam.bat file. For more info, see this Wiki page: "Starting without Steam"

Clear iTunes Temporary Files

If using USB to connect your iPhone, sometimes iTunes may cause problems with VTube Studio. If you have iTunes running, close both iTunes and VTube Studio.

Then, open an Explorer and type %ProgramData%\Apple\Lockdown in the folder navigation field. Delete everything in that folder, then try starting iTunes and VTube Studio again and check if the lag still happens.

Set Process Priority and GPU Priority for VTube Studio

Open Windows Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + ESC) and navigate to the Details tab. (If you don't see the Details tab, you may have to click More details at the bottom first.) Right click VTube Studio.exe and select "High" or "Realtime" under the option Set priority.

Set the "Preferred GPU" for VTS

Some laptops have an integrated GPU (included in the CPU) and a separate dedicated GPU. The latter is typically much faster. If VTube Studio is running on the slower GPU, set its "preferred GPU" to be the faster dedicated GPU.

  1. Press Windows key + i to open Windows Settings.
  2. Navigate to System -> Display -> Graphics Settings.
  3. Under Graphics performance preference, click Browse and add the .exe file for VTube Studio.
  4. After adding VTS, click Options and select which GPU you want to set as preferred.
  5. Restart your PC after saving your changes.

Check Your PC's Battery/Power Mode

Many laptops and some desktop PCs have a "power mode" or "power-saving mode" which can greatly decrease performance if it's active. If you're using a laptop, make sure it's also charging and not running on battery, as this can also activates power-saving mode.

Update Your Software

Make sure the following are all up to date:

  • Your graphics card driver
  • OBS or whatever capture software you're using
  • VTube Studio on Steam (make sure you're not on the beta branch)

Unplug Extra Monitors

If you have a multi-monitor setup, try unplugging one monitor and see if that helps. If so, that could be valuable information for further troubleshooting in the VTube Studio Discord.

Webcam Troubleshooting

If VTube Studio isn't detecting your webcam or you're experiencing other issues with the device, try the following solutions:

Use a Different USB Port

If your webcam is connected through USB, try plugging it into a different USB port.

Re-Select the Webcam in VTube Studio

Go to the webcam settings (Settings -> Webcam, Tracking, Video & Visual Settings -> Webcam Tracking -> Choose Camera) and select the webcam again. Then restart the tracking.

Check Your Webcam Access Permissions

Webcam access can be turned on/off for individual apps in the Windows settings. Make sure VTube Studio is not blocked and has access to the webcam.

Check Your Firewall/Antivirus

If you're running antivirus or other security software, make sure VTS is added as an exception. One anti-malware app that is known to cause issues for VTS is IObit Malware Fighter.

Some anti-malware apps may also block access to your webcam. If you're using any third-party antiviruses, check if they have webcam security settings. Programs like ESET Antivirus, AVAST and IObit Malware Fighter are known to have this setting.

For ESET Antivirus in particular, make sure to deactivate Webcam Protection like this:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/wiki/DenchiSoft/VTubeStudio/img/eset_antivirus_webcam_fix.png

Also make sure that VTube Studio is added as exception to your firewall. You can turn off your firewall temporarily to test if this resolves the issue (remember to turn it back on again afterwards).

Check if Other Apps are Using the Webcam

VTS can't access the webcam if another program is still using it. Usually this will be shown in the VTS logs as No data from webcam - Maybe another app is using it?.

This could happen if the camera is being used in a scene in OBS, even if that scene is not open. Make sure your camera is not being used anywhere else. If possible, quitting all other apps/programs running on your PC may also help.

Turn Off Your VPN

The webcam tracker used by VTube Studio (OpenSeeFace) uses your local network to communicate with VTube Studio. Because of that, VPNs might interfere with VTube Studio webcam tracking. Try turning off your VPN, then restart VTS and see if that helps. If that fixes your problem, add VTube Studio to the list of exceptions of your VPN app.

Move the VTS Folder

Try moving the VTube Studio folder somewhere else on your PC. If it's in the Program Files (x86) folder, move it to the Program Files folder and see if that helps. Don't worry about not being able to start the program through Steam; you can always start VTube Studio without Steam like this.

Install the Visual C++ Redistributable

The Visual C++ Redistributable should automatically install when you install VTube Studio through Steam, but sometimes it may not. Make sure you have it installed, otherwise the webcam tracking won't work and you'll get some error like Missing DLL in the logs.

You can download the Visual C++ Redistributable from the Microsoft website (check the section "Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022").

Check Your Windows Edition

Some Windows editions, such as "Windows 10 N Edition, lack some of the libraries required for the webcam tracking to work. This will also trigger the Missing DLL error in the logs.

If this is the case, you'll need to download some additional libraries. You can find and download the correct versions from the Microsoft website.

Run a Steam Integrity Check

Sometimes security software may delete files from the VTS directory that are required for the app to work. To check if all files are there, run a Steam integrity check. You can learn how to do so from the Steam Website.

Check the run.bat File

Try starting the webcam tracker manually and see if it works outside of VTube Studio. You can do that by running the file run.bat in the folder VTube Studio_Data\StreamingAssets\OpenSeeFaceTracker_v_1_20_2\binary in your Steam files.

This will show your webcam video, including the tracking dots, so don't do this on stream!!
