I was trying to place a time period for the game, because while I was imagining a dark ages/medieval setting, we also have locations that don’t really line up with that time period. However, that then gave me the idea of the game taking place in an anomalistic time period; essentially, a physical manifestation of a time anomaly. (Somewhat similar to the hub world in Sonic Generations, to compare it to something.) So if that was incorporated into the story, it could provide a justification for why post-nuclear cities are a quick walk from tribal camps. (Example: the player was the first human time traveler, and it went very wrong, so they must find a way out of the loop.)
That could also provide the broader goal of the game: Reconstructing the timeline by placing items of interest in locations that match where they should be in time.
