Rests

  • Break: used interchangeably with Rest. Try to use 'Rest' instead for standardization purposes, however some instances of this might still exist.
  • Short Rest: A brief rest required by law if driving for long stretches. Real law defines this as being at least 30 minutes long.
  • Early Short Rest: A Short Rest taken by a Trucker not because it is legally required, but because they need an opportunity to buy food, shower, etc..
  • Long Rest: Either a Sleeper Rest or a Restart Rest. We use the term Long Rest when we haven't yet decided which of the two we plan on taking.
  • Sleeper Rest: A rest overnight intended to be used for sleeping, eating, showering, etc.
  • Restart Rest: A long rest for more than a day intended to reset the clock on the driver's 60/70 hour rules.
  • Reset Rest: Interchangeable with Restart Rest. For consistency, try not to use this term.
  • Home Rest: An extended rest (i.e. longer than a restart rest) at the driver's home.

Locations

  • Truck Stop: A location intended for overnight parking for truckers with facilities, food, etc.
  • Gas Station: A location with refuelling facilities suitable for commercial trucking, as well as a basic convenience store, but no overnight parking.
  • Rest Area: A location with overnight parking available to truckers but no services available such as showers or food.
  • Unsafe Location: A parking location that is not a truck stop, gas station, or rest area. This can be imagined to be a highway ramp, an abandoned lot, or some other ad-hoc parking location when no other parking is available.
  • Shipper / Receiver: A location where a trucker either picks up or drops off a load. In the model, each city is assumed to have a single shipper/receiver at the city's centre.
  • Destination: When this word is used, it typically means the shipper/receiver toward which a Trucker is currently travelling as opposed to its next stop along the way.

Time Periods

  • Driving Period: The period of time in between Home Rests.
  • Detention: Time spent at the shipper or receiver waiting to start driving.

Regulations & Violations

  • Parking Violation: An incident where a trucker parks in an unsafe location because no other options are available.
  • Hours Violation: An incident where a trucker drives or is on duty for more hours than allowed by regulation.
  • N-Day Rule: The regulation defining the total number of duty hours a trucker may work in N days. For the purposes of this rule, a day is simply the 24-hour span between two midnights with no consideration for the time or duration of a trucker's breaks.
  • 7-Day Rule: See N-Day Rule
  • 8-Day Rule: See N-Day Rule
  • 60-Hour Rule: Interchangeable with 7-Day Rule.
  • 70-Hour Rule: Interchangeable with 8-Day Rule.
    • This is the common parlance in the trucking industry, however it refers specifically to the current regulations and would have to change if we considered a scenario where the regulations were different. Thus, we use "N-Day Rule" more commonly in this model because it is more generic. However, you may see occurrences in the model where the N-day rules are referred to this way.

Other

  • Driver: Interchangeable with Trucker.
