Thomas Ballard was colonel of a foot regiment in Essex's Army. He was not Major-General of the army: that position was held by Sir John Merrick throughout the period covered by Wharton's letters. Although Wharton sometimes refers to Ballard as Sergeant-Major, this seems to mean brigade commander. The army treasurer's accounts mention money to be delivered to Sergeant-Major Ballard, Sir Henry Cholmley, and Sir Edward Peto for the army at Coventry on 30 August 1642, and another payment to Ballard as major of a brigade for a month beginning 11 November 1642.[1] Where Wharton refers to a Sergeant-Major-General without specifying a name, he could mean Ballard or Merrick. For disambiguation, more information will be needed about their locations from other sources.
