Servant - drgavinr/tei-texts GitHub Wiki

The word servant had a wide range of meanings in 17th-century England, from low-skilled, low-status labour up to members of the elite. Robert Scawen was a lawyer and Member of Parliament, but at the same time he was a servant of the Earl of Northumberland. In this capacity, he managed construction projects.[1] Even peers could be servants of the King.

In London, servant could mean apprentice, and sometimes the two words were used interchangeably.[2]
