The accounts of the treasurer of Essex's army show that Henry Billingsley was paid as Lieutenant-Colonel of Denzil Holles's Foot Regiment on 22 August 1642, and by 27 August he had become assistant to the Major-General.[1] He must be the lieutenant-colonel who Wharton says was cashiered. This gives a misleading impression that he had been removed from the army, but he was really only moved sideways. Wharton writes his name as 'Biddeman' or 'Briddeman', which is not phonetically similar to Billingsley. It may have been intended as an insulting nickname, but if so, the joke is now obscure.
