George Willingham was the former master of Nehemiah Wharton and the recipient of his letters at the Golden Anchor, St Swithin's Lane, London. He traded as a merchant and was a member of the Painter Stainers' Company. He died in 1651.
On 15 July 1642, Willingham contributed to the Propositions with a grey horse ridden by David Avys with carbine, pistols, buffcoat, and sword, all valued at £27.[1] Avys had been his servant or apprentice before joining the army.
In July or August, another of Willingham's servants, Nehemiah Wharton, joined the army. From August to October, Wharton sent nine letters describing his experiences. These were addressed to Willingham at the Golden Anchor, St Swithin's Lane, London, which was almost certainly the Willingham family's permanent residence.
