Plays Where Location Changes Can Be Used for Scene Segmentation

  • Goethe: Götz von Berlichingen (1773)

    • Five acts, no proper "scene segmentation", but segmentation easily possible through location changes (55 scenes).
  • Goethe: Egmont (1788)

    • Five acts, no proper "scene segmentation", but segmentation easily possible through location changes (13 scenes).
  • Günderode: Magie und Schicksal + Nikator + Udohla (all 1805)

    • These plays only know acts, but could easily be divided further into scenes, according to location changes within acts.
  • Goethe: Faust II (1832)

    • Has five acts, scenes are divided by location changes. "Klassische Walpurgisnacht" in 2nd act has three further subscenes.
  • Georg Büchner: Dantons Tod (1835)

    • This play only knows acts, but was easily divided further into scenes, according to location changes within acts.

Plays With 3-Level Structure or Other Anomalities

  • Gemmingen-Hornberg: Der deutsche Hausvater (1780)

    • Five "Handlungen", divided by scenes, so far so good. But first "Handlung" is divided into two "Aufzüge" (which are then further divided into scenes), giving the play a 3-level structure.
  • Tieck: Der gestiefelte Kater (1797)

    • Has epilogue and prologue, 3 acts, and two entr'actes.
  • Fouqué: Der Held des Nordens (1810)

    • Consists of 3 parts. (Is this somewhat comparable to Schiller's "Wallenstein"?)
  • Julius von Voß: Faust. Trauerspiel mit Gesang und Tanz (1823)

    • Play has five acts. Acts 1 and 2 have "Scenen". Acts 3 to 5 also have "Scenen", but they are further segmented into "Auftritte", giving the play a 3-level structure.
  • Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer: Johannes Gutenberg (1835)

    • 3-level structure (Abtheilung, Akt, Scene).
  • Karl Gutzkow: Richard Savage (1839)

    • 3-level structure (Akt, Szene, Auftritt).
  • Karl Gutzkow: Zopf und Schwert (1844)

    • 3-level structure (Akt, Szene, Auftritt).
  • Johann Nestroy: Freiheit in Krähwinkel (1848)

    • 3-level structure (Abteilung, Akt, Auftritt).
  • O. F. Berg / David Kalisch: Berlin, wie es weint und lacht (1858)

    • 3-level structure (Aufzug, Bild, Auftritt).
  • Ernst von Wildenbruch: Die Karolinger (1881)

    • 3-level structure in 4th act ("Szene", "Auftritt").
  • Frank Wedekind: Franziska (1912)

    • 3-level structure in "Bild" 1, 3, 5, 9 ("Akt", "Bild", "Szene").

Misnumbered Scenes (No Action Required on Our Part)

  • Benkowitz: Die Jubelfeier der Hölle, oder Faust der jüngere (1801)

    • Has two "Zweite Auftritte" in 2nd act, seems to be an erratum in the first edition.
  • Klingemann: Faust. Ein Trauerspiel in fünf Acten (1815)

    • Has two "Vierte Scene" in 2nd act, seems to be an erratum in the first edition.
  • Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer: In der Heimath (1865)

    • In act 2, "scene 2" doesn't seem to exist (scene 3 follows upon scene 1, probably just another miscount).
  • Ignaz Schnitzer: Der Zigeunerbaron (1887)

    • Strange numbering of scenes in acts 1 and 3, should probably check back with the original print edition.
  • Alberti: Brot! (1888)

    • Scene III/5 seems to be missing, jumps directly from III/4 to III/6.
  • Ludwig Rubiner: Die Gewaltlosen (1919)

    • Has two "Achte Szene" in 4th act, seems to be an erratum in the first edition.
  • Bruno Ertler: Das Spiel von Doktor Faust (1923)

    • In act 3, scene 8 seems to be missing (we could check back with a print edition).
  • Bredow-Görne: Hypatia (1878)

    • In act 4, scene 7 is missing, right after scene 6 follows scene 8.
    • In act 5, there are two scenes numbered "scene 3".

Bugs and Missing Text

  • Friedrich Schiller: Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua (1782)

    • The better part of the dramatis personae is missing, the TextGrid version only contains the first 3 characters.
  • Benkowitz: Die Jubelfeier der Hölle, oder Faust der jüngere (1801)

    • The play features five "Verwandlungen" subsections in IV/4 and four "Verwandlungen" in V/1. The short dialogues between the beginning of the scenes and the actual "Verwandlungen" is missing in both cases, but they are still intact in the version at zeno.org: IV/4, V/1.
  • Goethe: Faust I (1808)

    • Only contains "Vorspiel auf dem Theater" so far, the missing parts have to be reintegrated. <particDesc> seems to be complete, though.
  • Robert Reinick: Genoveva (1850)

    • Wrong file! (Has Wagner's "Lohengrin" as content.)
  • O. F. Berg / David Kalisch: Berlin, wie es weint und lacht (1858)

  • Widmann/Goetz: Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung (1874)

    • Main text completely missing. Yet <particDesc> has made it into the file somehow.
  • Carl Hauptmann: Musik (1918)

  • In general: location/set information after the dramatis personae mostly have been left out when converting the plays to TEI, see for example Gottsched's Cato at zeno.org and at Textgridrep.
