â Supported
Except where noted, LiveView on all currently supported cameras returns a 1024x680 preview image that mirrors what is shown on the camera LCD/Viewfinder (without overlays), so is useful especially when using focus-assist. The preview is small enough that applications like APT can update the image multiple times a second.
If your camera is not listed but works with the Sony Imaging Edge Remote software over a USB connection, we should be able to add it here. See the Installation page for how to get the info needed.
Connection Protocol
Depending on the firmware installed on your camera, the "USB Mode" may be represented differently. Here are some general notes that seem to apply to many cameras.
| USB Mode | Can connect? | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto | No | The camera and computer will try to use the most appropriate mode. This will generally end up being "Mass Storage" or "MTP" |
| Mass Storage | No | The camera will show up as a disk-drive, allowing you to copy images/videos off the memory card |
| MTP | No | The camera will use the MTP protocol. It shows up in the list of cameras, but Windows won't let the driver connect to the camera. My theory is that for Sony cameras MTP only allows retrieval of images, but prevents actual control of the camera |
| PC Remote | YES | The camera will use the Sony version of the PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) which is what the driver needs. PTP is a simpler version of the MTP (Wikipedia) protocol and is handled by the Windows MTP driver |
Tweaking the Windows Device Manager for the latest Sony cameras (A7C, A7RIV, A7SIII, and newer cameras)
Newer Sony models seem to have switched to using libusbK as the native driver in Windows.
- This driver cannot detect the camera when it is associated with libusbK.
- The Sony Remote software cannot detect the camera when it is associated with this driver.
(at some point I'll get some images in here)
To switch the camera to "MTP" mode in the Windows Device Manager
- Open the Windows Device Manager by clicking "Start" and typing
Device Manager, then press ENTER. - Double-click "libusbK devices" in the list (your camera must be plugged in and turned on)
- Your camera should appear, listed as something like "Sony Remote Camera"
- Double-click on the camera
- Select the
Drivertab - Click the
Updatebutton - Click
Browse my computer for drivers - Click
Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer - Note the current setting - one of the entries should already be selected, most probably 'libusbK`. You will need this info to go back to using the Sony Remote software (I personally have no experience of this part of the process, but I have been told by a number of users that they switch back and forth regularly)
- Select
MTP USB Deviceand pressNext, Windows will update the camera to use it's built-in MTP driver - You may need to disconnect and reconnect the device to associate it with the new driver
Important: Just because the Windows driver is "MTP" this doesn't mean you should switch the camera to MTP mode - see "Connection Protocol" above.
