In settings(.bat) or settings.ini, enable Keyboard mode/set Autostart to 0 to choose a controller to manually start a song with.

To choose a default controller, go to Change Mode in the pause menu, press "Bind" with "Players" set to 1, press any button, and then select "Save Settings". If Keyboard mode is off, it will select the controller bound from this menu, or the one set in the settings.ini: [Player1] Device.

Upon first playing, you are asked whether you want to boot into the song automatically with a preset controller index, or always select a controller to start a song with manually.

Depending on the controllers you plug in and disconnect between game sessions, it could change which controller belongs to which player, which effects what controller is used for starting a song automatically.

Connecting an Xbox gamepad as player 1, then connecting a guitar as player 2, setting the default controller to the guitar, and then ending the game but then disconnecting and reconecting both but connecting the guitar first.
