Thelma was an infant and lived on a farm in Union Township, Iowa with her parents, George and Julia. Her parents were both born in the United States, but her maternal grandparents were born in Norway and her paternal grandfather was born in England. Her father was a farmer, and rented the farm. Her parents had only been married a year when she was born.

Thelma was 10 years old and her family were in Long Beach during the 1910 Census. Her father, George listed his occupation as "own income". I think they may have been in Long Beach on vacation, since they were back in Iowa by the 1915 state census.

Apparently, a lot of people from Iowa visited and moved to Long Beach - so many people moved between Iowa and Long Beach that Long Beach developed the nickname ``Iowa By the Sea''.
