3.2 Configuring the Wolf Launcher interface - dikodahan/dikodahan.github.io GitHub Wiki

If this is not your first device you are configuring, you may want to skip to section 3.6 of this guide that describes how to replicate an existing Wolf Launcher configuration from one device to the other.

In This section I will highlight a few of the major configuration options for the Wolf Launcher. I will not go through a complete step by step, as every person may want other sections and different apps in each section. I have also included a link here to a very well done video that specifically covers the more common configuration options. Very much worth watching to make it customizable for your needs.

By having a specific app selected and press and hold the OK button on your remote, the main menu will appear on the right hand side. It has a few options:

  1. MOVE - Move the selected app to a different location within the same section.
  2. Configure - Configure the look and feel of a selected app (icon, text, color...).
  3. App Info - Opens the android app management settings (will only appear for non-system apps).
  4. Uninstall - Uninstall the selected app.
  5. Create Folder - Creates a new folder, that can also be password protected, for apps (just like a tile with apps on your phone).
    1. If you created a folder, you will also now see the Delete Folder and Move to Folder options appear.
    2. Any apps within a deleted folder will just automatically move to the top level location the folder was in.
  6. Move to Section - Move the selected app to a different section.
  7. Launcher Settings - Configure the Launcher options:
    1. Sections - Add and Remove sections and widgets.
      1. You can add sections, like: Entertainment, Live TV, Sports, Internet, Fitness, Utilities, Settings...
      2. After creating the new sections, you can also move them around to set the viewing order of the sections.
      3. After adding sections, you will have the ability to click on each section under the Sections menu to configure the section's parameter.
        1. For example, after creating all your selected sections, you might be left with the default Applications section left (which is the only section that cannot be deleted) with nothing in it, but the title still appearing. You can hide the title if you wish to do so.
    2. Wallpaper - Select a wallpaper as a background instead of the default black background.
      1. I will provide an example of downloading a wallpaper and selecting it later in the guide.
    3. Hidden Apps - Select which apps you want to hide from view completely.
      1. For example, the Fire TV Player is used by Prime Video to play content, however, you do not need to see the app in order for the Prime Video app to use it when playing selected content.
      2. You can always go back into this setting and unhide them.
      3. If you want to protect certain apps, like system settings apps, it is preferable to create a password protected app and move those apps into that folder, vs hiding them.
    4. Status Bar - Completely hide the top status bar or just add/remove certain elements from it (clock, date, network, Bluetooth).
  8. Android Settings - Opens the regular Android Settings menu.
  9. Other Settings - Opens the backup/restore options for the Wolf Launcher home screen configuration. You can also change the logo image at the top left corner of the screen if you'd like.

I recommend Playing around with the interface to test out the options. It is very intuitive and easy to set up. You really can't "screw things up" with this interface.

If at any stage you to revert back to the stock interface, you can always re-enable the Stock Launcher through the Launcher Manager app.
Once you switch back to Wolf Launcher, all the settings you previously configured are saved, so there is no concern there!

Setting up a wallpaper for Wolf Launcher

The first step is to choose and download the image you want to set as your wallpaper. You can choose any image you want, including a family photo. We will be using the TV Bro app, which is a browser with download capability.
I will show an example below using a free 4K and HD quality images to download, but as long as the image you are interested in is available online for you to download, you are all set to do the same as this example, just replace the URL link with yours.

  1. Launch the TV Bro app.
    1. Press the Back button once. You can now move right to the URL line, which will popup the on-screen keyboard.
    2. Type in: unsplash.com and open the web site. Remember, you can replace the URL with your link to download your own image and skip the following sub-steps for this specific step.
      1. Move the cursor to the top of the screen to click the "Explore" option.
      2. Move the cursor to the Backgrounds option under "Browse thousands of free images on Unsplash" and click on it.
      3. Move the cursor to the images under "Popular categories" and move it to the right to click on the right arrow to expose additional categories. Click on the Desktop Backgrounds category.
      4. Depending on your TV (4K or HD capable), click on the relevant category under "Popular categories".
      5. Browse the images and click on the one you like. On the popup screen, click on "Download Free" on the top right corner.
        1. This will download the image to your device.
Another option to transfer your own pictures is to use the X-Plore app from the apps repository under the Misc section.
Use this video link to see how to use its WiFi File Server functionality to "push" your images from your phone onto your device.
  1. While one of the apps is selected, long press the OK button on your remote > Launcher Settings > Wallpaper
    1. Check the Application Wallpaper check box.
    2. Click on Select Wallpaper (if you get a allow permission request, allow it) > Internal Storage > Download > select the desired wallpaper that you downloaded.
      1. After choosing the Download folder for the first time, in some cases it will automatically show that folder for any future search.

Setting up widgets for Wolf Launcher

Widgets support has only been implemented properly starting Android OS 9 and above. If for some reason it does not work for you, you can try the manual steps to enable this in the collapsible section below.

I will show an example here using the Weather XL Pro app to display your local weather in a stretched single widget.

  1. Launch the Weather XL Pro app.
    1. In the notification to access current location for weather information, click OK. Then, click Allow.
    2. Press the Back button on your remote to exit the screen that say "Touch to skip the demo".
    3. Press the Back button again on your remote to exit to your Home screen.
  2. Press and hold the OK button to have the launcher side menu show up.
  3. Launcher Settings > Sections > Widgets
    1. Note that you define how many rows (default 1) and columns (default 3) to host widgets in. In this example we will only use 1, so we need to change the columns to 1.
      1. You will notice that the section updates accordingly.
    2. Change the Height parameter to 240 from the default 420.
    3. Click the Back button to apply the new settings. Press the Back button on your remote a few more time to exit to your home screen.
  4. Move with your remote over to the widgets section. While selecting the unpopulated or existing widget, press and hold the OK button > Pick widget
    1. You will notice that that all apps that support widgets already present their widget options for you to choose from.
    2. If at any point you receive an error message that Widgets are not restricted, follow the instructions in the expandable section below.
  5. Select the long Weather XL strip that shows the five days weather forecast.
    1. You will be presented with a few settings options for the widget. This will vary from one widget to another.
    2. For example, you can change the background theme from Light to Dark.
    3. Make sure to select the right location. In the location area, when clicking the drop-down link, one of the options is Current Location.
      1. In the warning message asking for permissions, click SETTINGS > Allow.
        1. In some rare cases the Allow option may not be visible. If that's the case, follow these steps before returning to configure this option:
          1. Press and hold the OK button > Android Settings > Apps > See all apps > Weather XL > Permissions > Location > Allow all the time. Repeat the location settings once more.
    4. Click OK at the bottom right side of the screen.
If you were not able to add widgets, try expanding this collapsible for the manual instructions to enable it.

In essence, any app that supports widgets on Android OS can work here. You will need to do some digging around to figure out which apps support widgets and are available through the Google Play Store for you to download.
Unfortunately, though GTV/ATV devices can support widgets, they do not have a native simple "checkbox" to check to enable this function on some of the older OS's and even on certain flavors of Android version 9. Therefore we will need to run a debugging command in its shell. Don't worry, I'll guide you through it.
Worth noting that is not a guaranty that it will work though...

  1. Launch the Unlinked app store and open to the DIKO+ store.
  2. Install the Remote ADB Shell app.
    1. Once done exit the Unlinked app.
  3. Launch the Remote ADB Shell app.
    1. Click OK on the New Key Pair Generated message.
    2. In the IP address section, type in: 127.0.0.1
    3. Leave the default port of 5555 as is.
    4. Click CONNECT.
      1. Upon initial launch you will be asked to Allow USB debugging.
        1. Press the OK button to check the Always allow from this computer checkbox. Then press ALLOW.
    5. Type in the following command (case sensitive!):
appwidget grantbind --package com.wolf.firelauncher --user 0
      1. Word to the wise! Google's keyboard tries to auto-correct mistakes. You may need to type each word and then select the correct word above the keyboard on the suggested options.
      2. After running the command, you should only see the command prompt appear below again. This means the command ran properly. Otherwise, you will get some sort of an error message, which most likely means you misspelled the command.
    6. Press the Back button a few times to exit the app.

Since not all widget apps work properly on all TV streaming devices and OS versions, you may not be able to see a nice clear view of the widget.
I'm afraid I cannot help much here, but you can simply search for other apps with widgets and run this process again.
