- Enabling virtual mouse functionality has several steps to it. It will require you to purchase the app TV Quick Actions directly from the Google App Store first in order to get this working!
A mouse capability may be required in some apps. In general, I try to avoid suggesting apps that cannot work with just the device remote, however, very few ones will require it. If you are using one of the apps and you realize that just the regular remote does not work for it, you can consider installing support for it. Expand the collapsable section below if you wish to install this capability.
Enabling virtual mouse on ATV/GTV devices
There are many types of remotes for ATV/GTV based devices. This make it a bit more complex to configure this, but not by much :)
IMPORTANT NOTE! The order of the steps below is critical to avoid remote misbehavior!
- Launch the Google Play Store from your device.
- Scroll up to the Search option. Start typing to search for tv quick actions. By the time you type in "tv q", you should probably already see it listed below. Click on the app.
- If this is the first time you are installing this app, it will prompt you to purchase it. Complete the payment process for it and it will install it on your system. If this is not the initial purchase, you will simply see the option to Install the app.
- Once installed, click Open.
- This will launch the initial setup process for the app.
- Click Continue several times until you reach the section called "Allow show overlay". Click ALLOW > Scroll towards the bottom and enable TVQuickActions Pro. Click Back button once to return to the setup process.
- In the "Disable battery optimization" screen, choose: NOT NOW.
- In the "Start accessibility service?" message, click AGREE > System (GTV) / Device Preferences (ATV) > Accessibility > TvQuickActions Pro > click to Enable it > OK. Once done, press the Back button a few times until you return to the Setup screen of the TV Quick Actions app.
- Go to: Settings > ADB > Enable the following items:
- Use ADB for remap.
- You will receive a prompt to "Allow USB debugging". Press the OK button to select the "Always allow from this computer".Then scroll down to select the Allow button and press OK.
- ENABLE ONLY IF YOUR DEVICE IS USING GTV/ATV VERSION 11 AND ABOVE!: Use ADB for mouse.
- Use ADB for killing apps.
- Use ADB for some actions.
- Use ADB for remap.
In the next section we will set up the "trigger" button to use in order to bring up the Quick Actions menu. For this you will need to consider which button to use. Try to leverage any usually unused buttons in your remote. |
---|
- Press the back button on your remote a few times to return to reveal the left hand menu of the TV Quick Actions app again.
- Go to: Buttons & actions > ADD BUTTON (do not change the Button BACK already there) > Current button. A popup message appears waiting for you to select which button would you like to use bring up the popup menu.
- Press the button you want to use as the trigger button.
- For example, on Mecool devices I recommend using the Bookmark button (top left to the arrows buttons). On Google Chromecast with Google TV I recommend using the Mute button.
- After setting the trigger button, you can now allocate what action would you like to assign to each arrow button. You do that by pressing the OK button on each one of the buttons (Right, Left, Up, Down) and selecting the option you want enabled for it.
- As an example, I am sharing here my personal recommended settings (just as a recommendation!):
- Button Down - enable mouse functionality. From the top menu: FEATURE > Cursor.
- Button Up - restart streaming device (useful when behavior gets funky). From the top menu: ACTION > Reboot.
- Button Left - show recently used app (useful shortcut for most used apps). From the top menu: ACTION > Open recents.
- Button Right - clean all apps cache memory (frees up device memory and helps in clearing app specific funky behavior). From the top menu: FEATURE > [ADB] Clean all apps cache.
- As an example, I am sharing here my personal recommended settings (just as a recommendation!):
- Press the back button return to the main Buttons & actions section.
- You also have the option to allocate a specific button to kick-off a specific app. For example, if you have your Netflix or YouTube button on your remote but you are not using these apps, but you want to allocate the button for a different use, like; using the Netflix button to trigger the Bee TV app.
- Important! In order to accomplish the above you need to make sure the relevant button app (like Netflix) is either uninstalled from your system or disabled (because some devices force some apps to be on the device, but in the app settings you can disable them).
- From the Buttons & actions page, select ADD BUTTON from the bottom > Current button > press the app specific button on your remote (like; Netflix).
- Select the Button action type > Usual action (TvQuickActions panel gives you the ability to popup a different 4 options menu if you'd like).
- You new have the option to set up a different behavior for each button tap type. By default, the Single press is the usual behavior. Press Single press > choose the relevant app you would like to allocate to it.
- Add additional functions for the other tap options, if you'd like.
- You can now exit the app and test the behavior on your main screen.
You can now switch your remote from regular remote mode (D-Pad mode) to mouse mode. To switch to mouse mode, press the trigger button you have previously selected. You should see a TV Quick Actions menu appear, in which you have added the Mouse option. Press the selected arrow button to trigger the virtual mouse. You can now use the arrow buttons to move the mouse on the screen and press the OK button and the mouse click option. In mouse mode, you can use the arrow button by double clicking it to simulate a scroll dow or up motion (like putting your virtual finger on the screen and scrolling). To switch back to regular remote mode (D-Pad mode), simply press the Back button on your remote. |
