DDB_G0267786 - dictyBase/community-annotations GitHub Wiki

The Dictybase curators have noted the similarity of DDB_G0267786 with the gene niban. Niban was isolated by a Japanese group in 2000; the name means "second", as it was the second new gene to be found in a screening for genes overexpressed in renal carcinogensis Majima et al. (2000), Adachi et al. (2006). Niban has since been found to be overexpressed in a variety of other cancers Ito et al. (2010), Matsumoto et al. (2006) . Little is known about its function; like several other genes involved in renal carcinogenesis, it appears to interact with the Tor pathway controlling translation rates, possibly in relation to ER stress Sun et al. (2007).

In Dictyostelium, DDB_G0267786 appears to be cell-cycle regulated, expressed in late G2 at the same time when virtually all S-phase and M-phase specific genes are active (see graph below). The effect is highly significant [the null hypothesis (constant expression in the cell cycle) could be rejected with p<2e-187]. The gene is slightly overexpressed in the rblA disruptant (1,5-fold; p<0,005) but appears primarily regulated by at present unknown, Rb-independent mechanisms. No ortholog of DDB_G0267786 is recognizable in yeast.

Another Dicty cell-cycle regulated gene with links to renal cancer is the folliculin-interacting protein DDB_G0289243.

Work in Dicty might clarify the role of these proteins in cell proliferation.
