Welcome to the SOGOS wiki!

SOGOS stands for Southern Ocean Glider Observations, and was a field experiment that was run in the Indo-Atlantic section of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (south of Africa), just south of the Polar Front. The primary set of observations were collected by two gliders, which tried to maintain proximity to a BGC Argo Float.

The main goals of the project are:

  • Explore the submesoscale activity in this region. (what instabilities, what structures, roles in budgets)
  • Understand how ventilation happens. (what structures, do we see events, are regions more important than others (?), what scales (??))
  • ...

Questions we can ask and answer from SOGOS obs:

  • Statistics of instabilities.
  • Relative role of instabilities in ML heat/stratification budgets. Might be interesting if the ML salinity has important role to play in setting the stratification, since the surface haline density fluxes might be weak. Johnson et al 2016 identified the ACC as a region where

Potential Papers:

  • Submesoscale Spice and BGC tracer variability/spectra in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current
  • ???

Others:

  • Role of N2 at base of ML in tracer subduction? Can be attempted in models, but not with SOGOS - since SOGOS always sampled at time when N2 was high at the base of the ML.
  • Along isopycnal analysis of tracer subduction, and role of submesoscales in the idealized model.
  • Where is the seasonality of submesoscales in the Southern Ocean? In models MLD show strong seasonality but KE does not. Why - unresolved? mechanisms are exchanged (winter MLI and summer frontogenesis are of comparable strength)?
