Comparisons

Honest side-by-side comparisons between NeuralMind and the tools developers most often evaluate alongside it. Each linked page follows the same structure: what the alternative is → how NeuralMind differs → when to pick which → feature matrix.

Full source of these pages lives at docs/comparisons/. The wiki version below is a convenience mirror with anchor links.

When to read each page

Compared against Best when you are asking
Cursor @codebase "I use Cursor — do I still need this?"
Aider repo-map "Aider already builds a repo-map, isn't this the same?"
Sourcegraph Cody "How is this different from Cody's code context?"
Continue / Cline "I already have an MCP-capable IDE agent"
GitHub Copilot "I pay for Copilot — does this overlap?"
Windsurf / Codeium "How does this compare to the Windsurf IDE?"
Claude Projects "Can't I just attach files to a Claude Project?"
Prompt caching "Doesn't prompt caching solve the cost problem?"
LangChain / LlamaIndex for code "Can I just wire up RAG myself?"
Long context windows "Claude has 1M context / Gemini has 2M — why compress?"
Generic RAG over a codebase "Isn't this just RAG with extra steps?"
Tree-sitter / ctags / grep "Why do I need embeddings at all?"
Graft "Graft also builds a local code graph and wires into Claude Code — what's different?"
codebase-memory-mcp "It indexes 162 languages and the Linux kernel in 3 minutes — why not that?"
Mem0 / Zep "Isn't this just AI agent memory, like Mem0 or Zep?"
Claude Code native subagent memory "Claude Code subagents already have a memory field — why do I need this too?"
Codex CLI memory ecosystem (Hindsight, Mem0, Basic Memory) "Codex has no memory — which of these should I use, and where does NeuralMind fit?"
Headroom "Isn't a compression layer between my agent and the LLM enough?"
The Context Engineering Stack (NeuralMind + Ponytail + Headroom) "How do NeuralMind, Ponytail, and Headroom work together as a unified token optimization stack?"

One-line verdicts

Compared against Short verdict
Cursor @codebase Works only in Cursor; NeuralMind works in any agent and remembers across sessions
Aider repo-map Aider is syntactic only; NeuralMind adds semantic retrieval and learned associations
Sourcegraph Cody Cody is server-hosted and org-wide; NeuralMind is local and per-project
Continue / Cline Those are agent runtimes; NeuralMind is the context and memory layer underneath
GitHub Copilot Copilot is hosted completions; NeuralMind is local context for any agent
Windsurf / Codeium Vertically integrated IDE; NeuralMind is editor- and model-agnostic
Claude Projects Projects reload all files every turn; NeuralMind retrieves only what the query needs
Prompt caching Caching amortizes a big prompt; NeuralMind makes the prompt small — combine both
LangChain / LlamaIndex Frameworks you assemble; NeuralMind is the assembled default for code agents
Long context (1M/2M) Possible ≠ cheap — a long window bills every token in it each turn; NeuralMind sends only the slice the question needs (670–961 mean tokens per question on the public benchmark, against 41,729–232,483 to paste every source file)
Generic RAG Text chunking loses structure; NeuralMind keeps the call graph
Tree-sitter / ctags / grep Deterministic but syntactic; use alongside NeuralMind, not instead of
Graft Closest architectural neighbour — both build local code graphs; Graft's is rebuilt fresh per query, NeuralMind's learns from usage. Graft publishes agent-loop SWE-bench results we don't have; no head-to-head run
codebase-memory-mcp The one competitor we've scored live: better ranking (MRR 0.96 vs 0.23 on requests, 0.60 vs 0.50 on click) at about 1,000 mean tokens per query against its 25,214–38,538, in a June 2026 run (v0.33.0) on those two Python repos, not re-run since — but it indexes 162 languages to our ten plus JavaScript and scales to kernel-size repos
Headroom Use both — Headroom compresses what flows to the model; NeuralMind stops most of it from flowing in the first place
Context Engineering Stack (NeuralMind + Ponytail + Headroom) These compose: NeuralMind (retrieval) + Headroom (transport) + Ponytail (generation) address token waste at every pipeline stage

TL;DR

Most alternatives cover retrieval (Cursor @codebase, Aider, LangChain) or indexing (Copilot, Cody) or hosting (Claude Projects, Windsurf). NeuralMind covers two things:

  1. What context the agent retrieves (progressive disclosure, 670–961 mean tokens per question on the public benchmark)
  2. What the agent remembers between sessions (a synapse layer learned from how you work)

It doesn't compress tool output: that turned out to cost tokens in Claude Code (compression benchmark).
