Just like staking Polkadot (DOT), unstaking your token is very easy. To do this: you must first clear the nominations to unbond the chilled balance, which takes 28 days to be processed.

Once your DOT is unbonded, you’ll be able to withdraw your assets back to your available account balance after 28 days.

This article tutorial describes how to unstake Polkadot (DOT) with your Ledger wallet.

Before you start

• Update the Ledger device to the latest firmware version.
• Update the Ledger Live app to the latest version.
• Make sure that you installed the Polkadot (DOT) app on your Ledger device.
  • Connect and unlock your Ledger device.
  • Open Ledger Live and go to My Ledger. “If asked, allow access to My Ledger by pressing both buttons on your Ledger device simultaneously.”
  • Navigate to My Ledger, click on the App Catalog, and search for Polkadot (DOT). Once located click on it to Install.
  • Wait for the installation process to finish. You have installed the Polkadot (DOT) app on your Ledger device.
• If you already have the Polkadot (DOT) app on your Ledger device, update it to the latest version.

Note: Before you can unbond your Polkadot (DOT) token, you must clear nominations first.

Clearing nominations

• Open the Ledger Live app.
• Connect your Ledger device to your computer, unlock it, and open the Polkadot (DOT) app. Wait for your Ledger device to display: Polkadot Ready.
• Go to your Polkadot account and click on the Stake button.

• Select Clear Nominations.

• Read the information in the popup screen and click on Continue.
• Wait for your Ledger device to prompt you to review the transaction.
• Verify and review the transaction on your Ledger device. If everything looks good, APPROVE the transaction by pressing both buttons simultaneously on your Ledger device to sign the transaction.
• Wait for your Ledger Live app to display: Transaction sent successfully.

Now you’ve successfully cleared (chilled) all of your Nominations.

Unbond your DOT assets (Unstake DOT)

• Open your Ledger Live app.
• Go to your Polkadot (DOT) account and click on Stake.
• Select Unbond and enter the amount you want to unbond. Keep in mind that unbinding a DOT balance takes 28 days to complete.
• Verify and confirm the unbond operation on your Ledger device.

• Connect your Ledger device, open the Polkadot app, and unlock it.
• Verify and review the transaction on your Ledger device, If all looks good, select APPROVE and press both buttons simultaneously to sign the transaction.
• Wait for the notification that indicates: Unbond transaction sent successfully.

Note:  After you’ve unbond your DOT, it’ll take 28 days before your asset is available to withdraw.
