The Fai
Fai are woodland creatures that are transformed into terrifying monsters by filtered mana secreted from the Yaga Trees of Eldritch Forests. They hate anything bright and fade into the shadows easily. Inherently magical, these creatures make sure that no other race but the Forest Elves can sustainably live in the Eldritch Forests.
Biology
Depending on the size and vitality of the creature, their transformation might occur either near the middle or the end of their lifespan, allowing them to reproduce and maintain the ecosystem of the forest. The sheer output of filtered mana that seeps into unsuspecting woodland creatures over time causes their body to transform, and in many cases, grants them sentience. However, the overwhelming amount of mana causes most Fai to go insane, often making them the bloodthirsty nightmares that they are known as. Their lifespan is increased dramatically, and it is theorized the most powerful Fai are practically immortal, with accounts of certain Fai correlating with stories that date back to the Mythic Age.
Due to the variety of woodland species affected, there are many different species of Fai, however some are rarer than others. Their magical origins also grant the most powerful Fai terrifying powers reserved only for those who dare trespass into the deepest parts of the Eldritch Forests.
