This is meant to document the steps to setup and run the global FV3GFS Doppler radar radial wind Observing System Simulation Experiment. There is a designated wiki page for each experiment. So far we have the following experiments, see their respective wiki pages for more information on setting up and running:
1. The Nature Run (NATURE)
This is the assumed truth. This is a two week (2x length of experiments), free forecast simulation at C768 (13km). Initial conditions are made using the default methods.
2. The No Data Assimilation Experiment (NODA)
This is the control simulation. This is also a one week, free forecast simulation at C768 (13km). Initial conditions are the same except the atmospheric state was replaced with the atmospheric state from an ensemble member before initial conditions were generated.
3. The NEXRAD Experiment (NEXRAD)
This is the first experiment which assimilates simulated observations by using the atmospheric forecast files from NATURE and the know coordinates of the U.S. NEXRAD radar network. Only simulated radial wind observations are assimilated. This is a 6hourly cycled 4DEnVar experiment at C768 (13km) deterministic and C384 (26km) for the ensemble. Initial conditions are created using the built in method, and the deterministic initial conditions are replaced with those generated and used for NODA.
