Design Process Overview - deco3500-2019/Team-Alpha GitHub Wiki

Poster & Additional Materials

The main exhibition material is a rich poster that describes various aspects of the application, such as research background, prototype, design process, and more. The second poster is a demonstration version of our team. We showcased the DECO7380 Showcase through the use of a time-space tunnel. This time-space tunnel also means that we need a lot of brainstorming to apply to this course.

Our Brochure is primarily an introduction feature that hopes to draw viewers' attention through bright background colours.

In addition, we also took a short introduction video, the video is divided into three parts.

  1. List the issues that our design hopes to solve.
  2. Video introduction.
  3. Prototype function display

Background research and preliminary investigation:

At the time of the establishment of the two-person team, we did domain research on the two areas of smart home and energy consumption visualization. The main focus is on the impact of advanced technologies such as smart homes on the family. This influence affects not only daily life but also the family and society. Not only that, but the literature also covers a large number of advanced smart home research cases, which not only enables us to understand more of today's cutting-edge research areas but also allows us to see hidden dangers.

Combining the research in these documents, we have identified our design space to enhance people's connections with society and families through smart homes. Because through our research, the use of smart homes has been a trend. In the future development of smart homes, smart homes will play an increasingly important role. There are more jobs and things in people's daily lives. It will be done by smart homes, which will make people increasingly lack communication and communication with the outside world, and even the relationship in the family will become alienated. The reason people use smart homes is to make life easier and to spend more time on more meaningful things. If using smart home violates this original intention, it makes people more lazy and social. Separation and family alienation, smart things like smart homes, bringing convenience to people's lives, will become meaningless. Therefore, we came to the preliminary design direction.

According to the Global Energy and Carbon Dioxide report, global electricity demand increased by 4% in 2018, almost double the growth rate of total energy demand. A large amount of electricity consumption not only leads to a significant reduction in energy reserves but also leads to a sharp increase in gas emissions.

Although some technologies and well-designed products, such as energy-saving light bulbs, are working to reduce energy consumption, it is still inevitable that human bad behaviour causes a lot of waste. For example, it is often seen that some people leave the room without turning off the lights. In order to address these types of behaviour, a home energy management system was invented to automatically shut down applications that were not in use. However, it has been proven that perceptual control has a more positive impact on users, making residents more likely to develop habits.

Design Concept:

After such preliminary literature research, we have determined our overall design direction, designing a device that can visualize home energy and control functions in a smart home environment.

After determining the research direction, we began to study the details of our design. We first integrated the ideas of everyone in our group, and then we discussed the first version of the design is a virtual reality glasses control monitoring glasses using VR technology. Then we made a presentation on the workshop to introduce our ideas to the teachers. After getting feedback from the teachers, we found that there were problems with the design of our current stage and then decided to conduct a re-investigation and research.

Interview and data analysis:

We first conducted the first interview survey study. We got a lot of results. First, we learned that users can accept emoji to present the consumption of household appliances. Secondly, we understand the user's concern about the consumption of household appliances, and hope to find a way to control household electric energy.

Then we came up with our first plan, which is to design a control panel with control functions that demonstrates the energy consumption of household appliances through emoji. The general design direction and design ideas were determined. Next, we did another interview. The purpose of this interview is to get a new set of data, and the data obtained from the interviews will determine the function and form of some details of our design.

Through the analysis of the second interview, we determined that the control area of our design is divided into three layers, from top to bottom are high-energy appliances, dormant appliances and normal operating appliances. In addition, we have determined that when the appliance enters the high energy-consuming area, it will give feedback, such as sound and vibration.

Paper prototype:

Through the data and analysis collected in the two interviews, we set out to design our first paper prototype.

The design of our paper prototypes is only for our control interface.

At the stage of the low-fidelity paper prototype, we found 10 respondents to conduct tests and questionnaires. Then I got a lot of feedback and played an important role in the design of our next final prototype.

Final prototype:

After completing the design and research of the paper prototype, we began the production of the final prototype of our team. Because our prototype involves an operator interface and a presentation interface, after trying and discussing, we decided that our prototype would be made using a web page.

After making our high-fidelity prototype, we also found some users to test because the high-fidelity prototype is difficult to make, we have relatively few adjustments at this stage, mainly aimed at Possible restoration of our conceptual design.

Showcase:

Finally, we participated in the showcase, we did a lot for this showcase, we prepared two Posters, a Brochure, and a Video. So much of the relevant material is prepared to better introduce our prototype. Two posters are introduced and one is for publicity. We use bright colours to make people notice. Video Shooting We mainly focus on the presentation of features and the introduction of the background.
