The linux project collaborated mostly through exchanging patches until 2002, when the community decided to use BitKeeper, a proprietary distributed version control system that was free for these developers as long as they agreed not to develop a competing system of their own while using it. In 2005, this free license was revoked in reaction against one of the developers extracting metadata from Bitkeeper by reverse engineering its protocols.

In the month of April 2005, Linus developed Git. In June, the linux community began using Git. In July, Linus handed the project over to Junio Hamano, a soft-spoken developer with experience contributing to CVS.
