!README: The purpose of these exercises\tutorials - davidaray/Genomes-and-Genome-Evolution GitHub Wiki
I've redesigned this class over the past several years to make it much more hands-on. I believe this will make the class more useful to many students, especially graduate students, and will also provide anyone not doing actual research a window into how actual research proceeds in the real world.
To the right, you will find all of the exercises I hope to have you complete in throughout the semester. I will cover much of the material that's in these tutorials in class but not all.
These tutorials are meant to be worked through and read word-for-word. The most common mistake people make is to skip over steps because they didn't read carefully and missed a file transfer or something very simple. At that point, the student gets frustrated and starts asking for help. Asking for help is fine but if the instructions are followed, it should not be necessary.
The information included in these exercises is fair game for the exams regardless of whether I cover the same material in detail during the lectures.
So, work through them conscientiously and with an eye to detail.
