Opening a Workbook - czbar/ChessForge GitHub Wiki

To open a Workbook, select File -> Open Workbook from the Main Menu:

The standard Open File dialog will appear. Locate the file on your computer (red below), then click the OK button (green below):

You can open 2 types of files.

Chess Forge Workbook

Most of the time, you will want to open a regular Chess Forge Workbook. A Chess Forge Workbook has extension .pgn and contains special headers that identify the file as a Workbook. See Chess Forge File Format for technical details.

Generic PGN File

If you selected a non-ChessForge, "generic" PGN file, the program would identify Games and Exercises where the former is a regular PGN entity, namely a game starting from the initial position, while the latter is a commonly used extension of the PGN standard, allowing game fragments starting from any position. You can select all items using a checkbox on the left-hand side of the header row (red below) or specific items using a checkbox on the left-hand side of the respective item (green below)

The games and exercises you select will be added to the Games and Exercises in a new Workbook (green below):

You can then use the Regenerate Study from Games context menu in the Study view (red below) to create a Study Tree from the games, see Regenerating Study from Games for more details:

Note that you will be able to access the original file again (through other menus from the Chapters View) and import other games from it into your Workbook as Model Games or Exercises.
