Matching Games to Chapters by ECO - czbar/ChessForge GitHub Wiki

If the workbook already contains several chapters with studies, games, and exercises, and new games become available, you can import them into a separate chapter. You can then use the Match Games to Chapters by ECO function to match the games in this chapter to existing chapters based on their ECO codes. Games that fit within the ECO range of an existing chapter are moved to the chapter with the most games of that ECO, while any that do not match remain in the current chapter.

In our example, the workbook contains three chapters dedicated to specific openings:

• Italian Game (dark blue below) with 2 games, with ECOs ranging from C51 to C54 (light blue below)
• Scandinavian Defense (dark green below) with 1 game, with ECO B01 (light green below)
• Pirc Defense (dark purple below) with 3 games, with ECO B07 (light purple below)

Over 800 games were imported into the Chapter All Games (orange below). The list is collapsed due to its length, but the ⊞ sign (yellow below) indicates that games are present. Ensure that the All Games chapter is active (brown below) and run the Match Games to Chapters by ECO function."

 

System opens Move Games to the Suggested Chapters dialog box listing the games matched to the existing chapters. In our example, system matched:

• 3 games to Italian Game chapter (blue below)
• 3 games to Scandinavian Defense chapter (green below)
• no games were matched to Pirc Defense chapter

 

With over 800 games it is difficult to check, however we can use functionality of Identical Position to see the list of all games with a specific position. Below we can see that in All Games Chapter:

• Italian Game was played in 6 games but only 3 have ECO code C52 (dark blue below) which is within C51-C54 range of games in Italian Game chapter (light blue below). Remaining games have ECOs C57 or C59 which is outside that range

 

• Scandinavian Defense was played in 5 games but only 3 have ECO code B01 (dark green below) which is within B01 range of games in Scandinavian Defense chapter (light green below). Remaining games have ECOs B13 or B14 which is outside that range

 

• Pirc Defense was played in 5 games but none is within B07 range of games in Pirc Defense chapter (light purple below). Remaining games have ECO B09 which is outside that range.

 

Use the checkboxes to select the games you want to move and press the OK button (red above). The system moved 3 games to the Italian Game chapter and 3 games to the Scandinavian Defense chapter (green below), while no games were moved to the Pirc Defense chapter.
