Exporting Data from Chess Forge - czbar/ChessForge GitHub Wiki

You can export data from Chess Forge in three formats:

  • RTF – Rich Text Format, suitable for opening and editing in word processors such as Microsoft Word.
  • PGN – Portable Game Notation, the standard chess format for sharing and analyzing games.
  • TXT – Plain text format, useful for simple viewing or lightweight storage of game data.

To export, open the File menu (green below), select Export (red below), and then choose the desired format (orange below). The corresponding dialog will open, where you need to specify the required parameters. Some parameters are common to all three formats, such as Scope and Chapter Items (green below). Others are enabled only for specific scope, such as Workbook Items are enabled if the Scope is Workbook. Finally, some parameters are specific to a single format, such as Two-Column Format for RTF and Annotations for PGN (purple below). You also have the option to export FEN for any diagrams included in the export (yellow below):

  • Scope – Use the radio buttons to choose whether to export the Whole Workbook, a specific Chapter, or the Current View from which you run the export (for example, the current game).
  • Workbook Items – Enabled only when Scope: Workbook is selected. Tick one or more checkboxes to export the list of chapters (Content) or the index of games/exercises.
  • Chapter Items – tick one or more checkboxes to export the Intro, Study, Games, Exercises, or Bookmarks
  • Two Column Format - available only for RTF format. For each chapter item, you can select whether to export it in two columns; for example, the Intro can be exported in two columns while Study may remain in a single column.
  • Custom Headers – enabled only for RTF and TXT formats. Tick one or more checkboxes to define custom headers for specific chapter items. Note that some logic applies, and headers for an item may not be used if it is already clear where the item starts. For example, if a chapter has no Intro, the custom header for the Study will not be applied, because the Study will appear directly below the chapter title. If a chapter does have an Intro, it will appear below the chapter title, and the custom header for the Study will then be used to indicate where the study begins
  • Annotations – available only in PGN format. Tick one or more checkboxes to select whether to export Comments and Evaluations

In our example, we export the entire workbook (red below), which includes a chapter on Fried Liver Attack (dark blue below) containing a Study and two Exercises (light blue below), and a chapter on Kangaroo Defence (dark green below) containing an Intro, a Study, and five Games (light green below). From all chapters, we export the Intro and Study (yellow below), and additionally the lists of Games and Exercises (orange below). The Study will be exported in two columns (pink below), and the custom header for the Study will be Theory (purple below).

Once you confirm by pressing the Export button (brown below), the system generates an RTF file. After the header page (red below), there is the Study of Chapter 1 (green below), followed by the Intro (light blue below) and Study (dark blue below) of Chapter 2, which has a custom header Theory (purple below). The document ends with the list of Games (we had five from Chapter 2) and the list of Exercises (we had two from Chapter 1) (orange below)
