Project Pitch

Think paper.io but with real life location data. Xplore is a progressive web app where users record trips they go on (categorized: walk, run, bike, drive, etc), to gain territory. Users can join groups, and steal territory, and have time based competitions.

Main Challenges

  • How to request location data
  • When to start recording location data
  • How often to request location data
  • How to connect and map saved location data
  • Time based convex hull algorithms

Roles Responsibilities

Name Role Description
Josh Project Manager Writes the weekly status report. Organizes team meetings and guides important decisions. Helps keep project on schedule
Bryce Chief Architect Makes decisions about tech stack and code architecture. Leads development where needed. Takes notes during meetings
Jocelyn Head of QA Manages and enforces code creation and approval processes
Mark DevOps Specialist Sets up CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure resources, and distributes environment variables
Abbie UI/UX Designer Creates mockups and guides frontend deliverables to match

To Do (9/21/26)

  • Bryce: Build test PWA app
  • Mark: Explore database options for geo location storage and comparison
  • Josh: Org Chart
  • Abbie: App mockups
  • Jocelyn: Pull request and code management processes (create an organization)

Requirements

Demo 1 — Prototype

  • Map

    • Display a map where a user's walk can be represented.
    • Show a walking path on the map using mock or prototype data.
  • Walk Tracking

    • Allow the user to start a walk.
    • Allow the user to end a walk.
    • Display the walk/path on the map.
  • Territory Claiming

    • Show a mockup of what claiming territory will look like.
    • Demonstrate how a completed walk could result in claimed territory.
  • User Registration

    • Allow users to register an account.

Demo 2 — WIP

The application should move from a prototype to functional location tracking and territory claiming.

  • Active Location Tracking

    • Track the user's location while they are walking.
    • Update the user's path on the map as they move.
  • Territory Claiming

    • Allow the user to complete a walk.
    • Convert the completed walk into claimed territory.
    • Associate the claimed territory with the user.

Final Demo

The final application should support multiple users and allow users to see the territories claimed by other players.

  • Multiple Users

    • Support multiple registered users.
    • Display multiple users' territories on the map.
  • Territory Map

    • Show the user's own claimed territory.
    • Show other players' claimed territories.
    • Identify which player owns each territory.

Future / Stretch Goals

These features are not required for the initial implementation but may be considered if time allows.

  • Territory Stealing

    • Allow players to capture territory belonging to other players.
    • Update territory ownership when territory is captured.

Non-Goals

The following features are explicitly outside the scope of the project:

  • Workout tracking
  • Speed tracking
  • Chat features
  • Offline mode
  • Friends
  • Groups
  • Teams
