Proposal Overview

I think it would be really fun to create a small Fire Emblem Game. We can come up with whatever name we want, and whatever story we want. It would simply be a small turn based game with a story, different character types, and a small challenge to figure out how to balance the game to give all consumers / gamers a fun time. Here are some of my thoughts already to make this a simpler project for us to work with it.

I'm pretty flexible with different opinions or ideas. I just think it would be fun to create this game, so if you feel like you have other ideas that could go into this game idea to improve it (while staying within scope), feel free to join the team and add your ideas to make the game more fleshed out and a better experience (add your passion to the project).

Scope

Format

If we have someone who would like to put this game on a website or an app, that would be great. But if no one on the team knows how to do that, that is okay because we can take inspiration from CS 240 and make this a command line game. Something that you can run locally on your computer and wouldn't have multiplayer options.

Classes

At the beginning, we would probably only have 3 different types of classes: a Melee combatant, a Bow combatant, and a Magic combatant. If we have time, it would be great to implement the weapon triangle by separating the Melee combatant into Axe, Lance, and Sword. Could also be cool to add promotions to add variety into the classes. Any other additions to the classes would be dependent on our progress.

Plot / Map

To keep the scope small, we could keep it simple and have a simple 2-3 chapter plot / story arc. This means that we would need some sort of exposition / introduction before the combat, a map for each combat, and a resolution of the combat as part of each chapter. 3 Chapters does sound small, but I don't doubt the amount of work that would go into it. Of course if we are keeping on schedule with all of the other projects in our scope, we could increase the chapter count to increase the length of our project so long as we don't go over.

Items / Character Storage

In most Fire Emblem games, there is a weapon progression system by ranks, so we would want to create at least 2 ranks worth of weapons to start with. Of course, we could simplify this step a lot by simply grabbing the information of these weapons from other Fire Emblem games, but if we want to make them ourselves, it would take more time. In addition to the different items, we would also need to have characters able to use consumable items such as healing potions (vulnerary).

QA / Balance

A portion of our scope would be to ensure there is some sort of balance to this game. We don't want one class to be too overpowered in comparison to all the other options, so we would want to include balance testing in the bug removal process to ensure that all consumers / gamers are happy with what they find and play with.

Enemy AI

To create different Enemy AI, we would want to use the Strategy Pattern from 340 to give each enemy a different strategy on how they would want to fight. For example, they can have the strategy of CHARGE, where they rush towards the nearest player unit to attack them. Another could be GUARD, where they stand still until an enemy is in their range before attacking. We can add different strategies as desired, and if time is with us, but at least these 2 would be a good start for the Enemy AI.

Other features that would be fun to add if we have time in our scope

  • Each Character has a story and a personality, and we can have characters build bonds by performing actions next to other characters
  • Special abilities tied to specific classes or characters
  • Shops to buy different items or Houses to visit for more story / free items
  • Mounted combatants such as pegasus knights or horse riders
  • Difficulty settings to make the game more suited to the player
