Self Reliance Personal Finances Companion App - cs428TAs/f2022 GitHub Wiki

PROPOSED BY: Alexis Alvarez

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints started offering self-reliance classes a few years ago, one of which is called "Personal Finances". This class helps individuals learn and practice better spending and budgeting habits and teaches them to be more aware of where their money goes.

One of the first things this class has members do is track all the money they spend for three weeks, and then use that tracking to build a budget. This is a good practice but can be hard to do because it is hard to remember to carry around a notebook every time you go shopping, and there is not currently an app that allows you to track your expenses before creating a budget.

I propose an app that allows users to track their finances and budget in the way the Personal Finances Self-Reliance class suggests.

Basic Features include:

  • Tracking and categorizing expenses without budget constraints
  • Assisting users in creating a budget from tracked expenses
  • Excerpts from the Self-Reliance handbook
  • Inspirational messages from church leaders about personal finances
