Secondhand Marketplace - cs428TAs/f2022 GitHub Wiki

Problem

I'm a new grad student at BYU and one of the things that really fazed me in the first week was the absence of a secondhand marketplace. As students we aim to live frugally and reuse/recycle is one of the cornerstones of living frugally. There is an existing marketplace on Facebook but it's unstructured and difficult to navigate/find what you're looking for. For the buyer, it's difficult to make out if the posting is still available and what condition the product is in. For the seller, it is difficult to keep track of messages from potential buyers.

Solution

An App/WebApp with verified users (BYU ID at first, can later be extended to accommodate other use cases).

• The products listed would be categorized (eg - Apartment Lease, Books, Electronics, Furniture, Kitchen Appliances/Utensils, Clothes etc)
• The app will allow you to share(split the cost) for subscriptions to Netflix, Disney, Chegg etc
• Should have a mechanism in place to flag people selling/sharing homework and assignments
• Can potentially have Food-as-a-Service (highly ambitious, up for discussion)
• All the products listed ought to have reviews (for ranking purposes)

Seller

1. Any product that is posted would be validated - Product Photos, Serial No. (if available), Warranty Period (if applicable)
2. I would aim to have a feature in place which ensures the price the seller lists is sensible - neither too high, nor too low (to attract traffic to their product)

Buyer

1. A buyer would have the option to specify the boundaries for their search (kind of like Tinder)
2. Search and filter by Price/date posted (all run of the mill stuff)
3. A buyer would be able to leave reviews for the product they checked out and didn't buy (Good way to establish legitimacy/condition of the product)
