BYU Branded Malware - cs428TAs/f2022 GitHub Wiki

Malware - with a purpose!

And that purpose is education...i.e. this software will never be used outside the confines of this class and never for any malicious purposes.

"Thanks, legal, I'll take it from here!"

Malware got you down? Ransomware make you frown? Well, do we have the solution for you! Why not spread your (theoretical) hacktivist message as well as the Gospel!

Yes, that's right, it's BYU-Branded Malware! (Heretofore referred to as MARB-ware, because isn't the MARB just the worst?) What I envision this project being is an opportunity for us to learn the ins and outs of a specific malware, likely ransomware, by developing a strain of it ourselves - a strain that would have a publicly available decryption key in case of emergencies, and that would display fun, uplifting, or simply BYU-themed messages on the ransom screen instead of doom and gloom! And again, as always, this project should not and would not ever be released into the wild or used for any malicious purpose, but would instead be an opportunity for us to learn security principles and learn to work as a unique, dedicated team.

"Thanks, that's all folks!"
