App Description
Like the experience Duolingo provides for learning languages and Simply Piano provides for learning piano, ArtU will provide a module-based approach to self-expression and connection through art.
Features to Implement During CS 428
Similar to the Simply Piano app, a horizontal layout will feature 3 menu icons on the left: Expression, Gallery, Skills (top to bottom). The Expression and Skills pages are both reminiscent of the Duolingo and Simply Piano apps with modules containing 5 to 7 lessons each.
- Expression: Modules on this page will be successively unlocked with completion of previous modules, similar to Duolingo and Simply Piano.
- Gallery: This page will be filtered to the user's artwork by default and will provide the option to switch from "My Gallery" to "Shared Gallery" to view other users' artwork as well. An upload icon shown in the "My Gallery" view will allow the users to import photos of their art.
- Skills: All modules on this page will be unlocked from the beginning and will include content geared towards specific skills (i.e. color theory, elements of design, observational drawing).

Personal Statement From the Inventor
Emma Bennion, an Art BFA Major at BYU, invented this app idea and will provide lesson content. She explains her motivation behind the idea as follows,
"Science and math provide an understanding of a universal experience, while arts provide a universal understanding of a personal experience. It took me a while to understand the importance of the latter. Art has given me confidence in myself; it has shaped me, validated my experiences, and challenged me to improve. As I’ve experienced art's transformative effect in my own life, I’ve gained a greater desire to share it with others. ArtU goes beyond a Bob Ross tutorial. It would provide individuals with an experience that not only teaches skill but more importantly instigates connection, self-expression, and self-discovery."
