Introduction

This section provides information on methods used to engage citizens and other stakeholders in the Colouring Cities Research Programme. It also provides images and links to events carried out by CCRP international partners, and publishes summary findings. The aim is to support CCRP partners in their engagement programmes, and to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of these events, and to provide information of potential relevance to others involved in built environment public consultation work.

Question 1: For which of the following elements that characterise the buildings of the city would you like the Colouring Athens platform to collect data? image

Question 2: Colouring Athens aims to be a dynamic database that will be updated over the years and serve as a major tool for the understanding of the dynamics of urban transformations and the increase of the resilience of the city. Are there any additional elements that you believe that they should be collected to achieve the above goal?

Data on the condition of the buildings:

  • Degree of maintenance of the building (good, bad, unmaintained, ruin, abandoned / empty)
  • Is the building in danger of collapsing?

Data for public space:

  • Available parking spaces within the plot
  • Condition and access of building backyards
  • Characteristics of roads surrounding the buildings
  • Condition and characteristics of public realm around the building

Information on ownership:

  • Who is the owner of the building (types)

Historical information:

  • Historical significance of the building
  • Architectural style
  • Building conversion history
  • Name of the architect / civil engineer who designed the building

Question 3: Among other things, the purpose of Colouring Athens is to strengthen the participation of citizens in decision-making processes for the city. Which of the following questions do you think that we should include in the platform in order to achieve the above goal?

Question 4: Do you have any other suggestions or comments for Colouring Athens?

A significant part of the audience suggested the question “How do you think the building can be used / reused?” as a means of enforcing community participation in decision-making processes.

Other comments:

  • The project should be extended to public spaces.
  • The data must be editable through GIS applications.
  • The data could be linked to OpenStreetMap.
  • The data must be fully open.
  • It is important the platform environment is friendly and rewarding.
  • The database must be compatible with similar governmental databases.
  • It is important that the project gets a lot of publicity in order make people participate.
  • It is important to keep the data updated in order to make people feel that the database is reliable.
  • How do you ensure the quality and accuracy of the data? The data should be checked for their validity.
