Mailing List Conventions

This policy addresses the desire to to have uniformity with regard to the names of COIN mailing lists.

Project Mailing Lists

As per the previously adopted project management guidelines, every project hosted by COIN-OR must have a mailing list. The address of the mailing list will be

[email protected]

For most projects, this list will be multi-purpose.

  • posting relevant announcements,
  • discussing project usage, and
  • discussing development issues.
In general "coin" will not be a part of the name unless it is really part of the name of the project.

If there is relatively high traffic on the main project list, the project manager may request creation of one or more of the following optional lists:

projectname-discuss@ list.coin-or.org
[email protected]
[email protected]

In addition, the project manager may wish to create a list to receive automated traffic regarding SVN commits and/or action on Trac issue-tracking tickets. The expectation is that requests for such lists will be routinely granted, provided that the administrator believes the project manager understands the challenges and advantages of multiple lists. At the project manager's discretion, the original list ([email protected]) my be deleted or forwarded to [email protected] if desired. Special requests for lists of other names will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Global lists

Global lists may be created at the discretion of the administrator. The intent is that either the TLC or SLB should informally approves the creation of such lists. Generally, such lists will not have "coin" as part of their name, with exceptions granted on a case-by-case basis, when appropriate. Current non-project lists will be renamed to reflect this convention.
