Engine oil

Viscosity = thickness
In a 5W-30 for example, the number before the W (Winter) describes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the better the oil’s cold temperature/ cold start performance. The number after the W describes how thick the oil is at the engine’s normal operating temperature. See for nice chart: https://www.rymax-lubricants.com/blog/what-does-5w-30-actually-mean/
5W-40 is thicker at running temperaturethan 5w-30.

For Oil change, warm up the vehicle and let sit for atleast 5 mins after stopping.

Coolant change

Remove radiator cap. Remove lines to reservoir. Remove and wash reservoir if able. Drain coolant.

To bleed the air out of the radiator / cooling system.

  1. Once everything topped up, squeeze as many coolant hoses as you can. Top up, turn on the car and let it idle normally topping up as you go.
  2. Run the engine at 2500rpm for 5 mins until both radiator fans kicks in or blue coolant light is off.
  3. Let it idle normally then recheck the coolant reservoir.
  4. Inspect any leaks & reinstall service hole cover.

Checking wheels for play

Check play w/ hands at 12 and 6 positions, this is likely due to worn wheel bearings. Play at 3 and 9 positions is worn tie rod ends.

Types of greases

Synthetic is superior to non-synthetic in all applications.

Lithium (Petrolium based)

  • Adheres to metal
  • Non-corrosive
  • Moisture resistance
  • Handles stress well
  • Handles high temperatures
  • Petrolium not good for plastic+rubber (quickens deterioration)
  • Vaseline brand tends to run when hot, so not good if you expect it to stay in place

Silicone (Silicone based)

  • Sticky
  • Inhibits corrosion
  • Moisture resistance
  • Various formulations (ingestible/dielectric)
  • Only for low temperature and low stress applications

Dielectric vs Silicone

Dielectric is a form of silicone. Dielectric grease dies not conduct electricity and does not cure (stays pliable), silicone does not conduct electricity and cures to a hard form. Both prevent corrosion.

Brake & caliper

Use synthetic grease on slide pins specifically for brakes, not silicone base greases.

Electric tampering

Add a Circuits and Fuse Taps are never a good idea, especially in BMW cars that have every circuit in the car monitored by one module or another. Changing resistance on any of these wires can cause the modules function incorrectly. In addition fuse taps can spread pins in a fuse contact making for a poor connection in the block if ever removed.

The correct tie in for the car for any aftermarket accessories is at the main terminal on the battery for constant 12V power. (note there are 3 positive terminals on the battery, catch the smallest on on the outside edge). Then just attach a small guage wire with a fuse holder and fuse right at the battery and run the wire through the car to where you need it.

Accessory (power on while the key is inserted) can be found at the brake pedal (purple wire with white stripe at four pin harness above pedal) and then should go to a relay to run any additional accessories.
