Visiting Tartu, Estonia
Before you come
- Check weather in Estonia before traveling
- Buy health insurance - I recommend safetywing
- Get travel adapter - we have EU plug sockets
- Get e-sim (e.g. Airalo)
On arrival
- When you arrive then you can access wifi in the airport.
- If your telecom provider doesn’t support data abroad in the EU then get an e-sim or you can buy a prepaid sim card from R-kiosk in the airport I think, or when in Tartu go to the shopping center, and there is coop or some grocery store you can get a pre-paid sim card for €3-5
Getting to Tartu
Bus (recommended)
Once in the airport and you exit from baggage then head right after the doors, and it will take you through a corridor to the tram stop, and there is also a bus stop. This is LuxExpress buses that go from the airport to Tartu (bus stop with sign). This is the best way I think, there is also a train, but it’s about a 15 min walk (same exit though). If you like to go by train go for that :)You can get a bus ticket from https://luxexpress.eu/en/ on Sunday there are usually students that travel from Tallinn to Tartu so the bus might be full or your flight might get delayed (can’t change tickets for the bus).
Train
There is also a train which has more seats. https://elron.pilet.ee/et/otsing/%C3%9Clemiste/Tartu/2023-02-15 You need this route if you’re going by train. The link I shared has the date entered, elron.ee doesn’t allow you to buy more than 2 weeks in advance. If you buy in advance, you can get first-class seats, which are numbered and have a bit more room + charger. Otherwise, standard seats are also fine (no numbers and maybe no charger). the train station is located here:
the platform you need to be on is on the south side (same side where you are coming from the airport) so don’t go underneath to the other side which takes you to Tallinn main station. There are no signs out there so I just wrote it here, but if you ask locals I’m sure they’ll help you. If you need to call me, my number is +372 5670 9934
Getting to Codemagic Tartu office
Our office is located at Mobi Space, which is a co-working space in Tartu near the library at Akadeemia 3
Getting around
Most places are within walking distance. No need to use public transport or taxi. If you’re still interested the taxi app you should use is https://bolt.eu/en-ee/ in Tartu.
You can rent a car as well if you want with Bolt Drive or with CityBee application.
What to explore
in 2024 Tartu is EU culture capital :) https://tartu2024.ee/
I personally like to walk along the river from the market towards the beach. Definitely check out town square, there is also ice skating rink if you want to try it in winter. The town sq bells will ring every hour. I also like going to "Toomemägi" which is near town sq.
There is also this area "SUPILINN" it means soup town because all streets have some names of soup ingredients :D I like that part of town. Most places are closed on Sunday though so be warned, but the national museum is open I know. You can also check this website https://kultuuriaken.tartu.ee/en
Another nice neighborhood to explore is Karlova - it has mostly similar buildings as Supilinn. I like walking here too. If you arrive early then Karlova Kohv is a good place to check out, and Tassi Koogid makes lovely cupcakes and they are open later too. There are some second-hand stores there
There is also Aparaadi Tehas if you're going to explore Karlova where there are some shops to check out or cafes there. I wouldn't venture further past the railroad tracks there is nothing much there.
Tartu is known as the culture capital/University town.
If you like museums, then there are 2 main ones - AHHAA is a science and interactive one. I personally wouldn't go alone I get bored then, but I do like the national museum, which is a little hike north - https://www.erm.ee/ it's free and they also have some paid exhibitions. I recommend walking there as well :) you can take cab back if you want.
Pro tip for team event: buy mosquito spray from the shop
