DSF Spring 2024 Learner Log #2
Rose:
The highlight from the previous FOSS session, such as something you found particularly interesting. This could also be something you're excited to implement now.
- A noteworthy aspect from the last FOSS session was the emphasis on FAIR principles for data management. The clear explanation of Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable principles provides a solid framework for ensuring that our research data is well-managed and contributes to open science. I am excited to explore ways to implement these principles in my clinical research, considering the barriers associated with accessing and sharing health patient information.
Bud:
Something that you are looking forward to digging into deeper. This could also include ideas on how to apply concepts to your research in the future.
- From the FOSS overview, I am particularly looking forward to delving deeper into creating a robust Data Management Plan (DMP). The discussion on the elements of a good DMP, including information about data, metadata, policies for access and sharing, and long-term storage, highlighted the importance of planning for effective data handling throughout the research lifecycle. I'm excited to apply these principles to enhance the impact and reproducibility of my own research so that others can build upon it and effect greater change. In fact, we discussed this in our lab meeting on Friday.
Thorn:
Something that was challenging that could be worked on, such as anything that wasn't 100% clear and could be elaborated on. Any sticking points should be addressed here.
- The concept of licensing in the FOSS session was a bit challenging to grasp fully. While the importance of licensing for open science and data sharing was stressed, I would appreciate more guidance on how to choose the right license for different types of research outputs. Understanding the nuances of licensing, especially when dealing with code repositories and data, would be beneficial for ensuring proper attribution and usage of research outputs.
Additional thought:
Write anything that you think would be important for YOU later on.
