Should I use Calibre?

No. Calibre doesn't properly support fixed layout EPUB/MOBI, so modifying KCC output in Calibre will break the formatting. Viewing KCC output in Calibre is broken. On 7th gen and later Kindles running firmware 5.16.3+, you can get cover thumbnails simply by USB dropping into documents folder. On 6th gen and older, you can get cover thumbnails by keeping Kindle plugged in during conversion. If you are careful to not modify the file however, you can still use Calibre, but direct USB dropping is reccomended.

General:

  • All options have the additional description in a tooltip.
  • Use high-quality source files. It has a major impact on the final result.
  • Don't remove your source files! Conversion is irreversible.
  • When converting images smaller than device resolution enabling Upscale option is highly recommended.
  • All subdirectories in input directory/archive will be parsed too.
  • The first image found will be set as the book cover.
  • All files/directories will be added to EPUB/CBZ in alphabetical order.
  • PDF support is symbolic. KCC can only extract JPG images from them.
  • ComicRack metadata will be parsed only if they are saved in ComicInfo.xml file.

Metadata:

  • Build-in editor should be used only with archives not created by KCC. Workflow: Files -> KCC -> CBZ -> KCC -> MOBI will not produce valid output.

Webtoon:

  • KCC support both cut and uncut chapters. In second case program expects parts of a single chapter per directory.

USB upload:

  • It's recommended to drag and drop the final mobi directly into the documents folder on your Kindle.
  • If you are on macOS and use a 2022+ Kindle, use Amazon USB File Transfer (no login). Android File Transfer was previously reccomended but is much worse. OpenMTP might also work.

Hardware:

  • Panel View (automatic zoom) can be only disabled directly on Kindle. There is no KCC option to do that.
  • If you use any newer Kindle firmware 5.8.5+ is highly recommended.
  • If you use Kindle Keyboard you must update the firmware to version 3.4+. Otherwise, it will not be able open MOBI files created by KCC.
  • If you use any Kobo reader and page is cut in half - upgrade your firmware.
