XX Glossary Terminology - chigc/documentation GitHub Wiki
Definition of terms used in the course of the project
2nd Layer = Reached by clicking on the element groups (shown in gray when hovering) in the Navgraph. This layer (the pages for the element groups) displays an introduction to the content, an abstract representation of the relevant area of the canonic graph, a critical reading text for all the texts in the group, and facsimile snippets showing the group as it appears in the annotated manuscripts
3rd Layer = Reached by clicking on individual elements (nodes and text blocks) in the Navgraph, or clicking on the individual elements shown in the abstraction of the graph snippet on the 2nd layer. This layer (pages for individual elements) displays a critical reading text for the element and facsimile snippets showing the element as it appears in the annotated manuscripts
Cadmus = Annotation tool used to draw zones on manuscript facsimiles corresponding to elements in the superstructure (text blocks, nodes, diagrams, element groups). These zones are displayed either as colored shapes linked to the transcription (on the manuscript facsimiles in transcription display) or exported as snippets of facsimiles displayed on the 2nd and 3rd layers.
Connection = Lines connecting two of the nodes in the Compendium's graph
Critical text
Critical reading text
Diagram = A schematic (as opposed to pictorial) representation
Diagrammatic co-transmission = Diagram that is transmitted together in the same manuscript or on the same roll as the Compendium
Element Group = A section of the Compendium's graph comprising a group of nodes and texts. When hovering over the NavGraph, these element groups are highlighted in gray. Clicking on a group leads to the 2nd layer.
Graph Structure = An arrangement of the elements within the Compendium's genealogical graph. This includes the horizontal order of the nodes, vertical placement of nodes, and whether or not their are connectors between the nodes
Graph Version = A graph structure that is well represented in the Compendium tradition
Label = A textual element that is not a text block or the content of a node. Usually written in red, these elements usually clarify relationships (wife, concubine, etc.) but can also declare the end of an age or serve other purposes. The superstructure does not include identifiers for labels.
Manuscript Group = A group of manuscripts that, given shared visual features (layout and design), are clearly related
Medaillon --> see Node
Navigational Graph, NavGraph = Critical visual representation of the work based on the synthesis of various witnesses. Gives access to Element Groups [int. Link] discussed on the 2nd Layer [int. Link] and single Elements on the 3rd Layer [int. Link] of the edition. The current NavGraph [link to page] represents the "standard version" of the Compendium Historiae (Short Text Version, Graph Version I)
Node = The circles in the Compendium's graph that stand for single biblical figures
Picture = A pictorial or iconographical representation, that is, an image depicting a person, object, or scene. In the case of the Compendium pictures often appear within nodes (especially those marking the six ages) but can also be placed next to the text block or node they illustrate
Siglum = The unique combination of letters and numbers designating a manuscript witness of the Compendium in the database. Sigla are formed based on one or two letters associated with the city of the archive (B = Berlin, Bm = Baltimore, Bn = Bremen, Bo = Bologna, etc.) and a number reflecting the dating of the manuscript (a lower number is an earlier manuscript).
Sub-diagram = One of the diagrams that appears within the Compendium's larger genealogical graph. Sub-diagrams include figures showing cross-sections of the Ark, the 42 encampments of the Tribes of Israel in the desert, 12 Tribes of Israel around the Tabernacle, and a plan of the city of Jerusalem.
Superstructure = The sum of unique identifiers assigned to all elements that appear in all witnesses of the Compendium: nodes, texts, groups of elements, sub-diagrams, and pictures
Text Version
-
Short Text Version = The shortest, and probably earliest, version of the Compendium's text. This is the version that is edited in the critical text and found in witnesses K, C, C2, and Kö. All other versions (Interpolated, Long, Extended) are not stable, single texts found in a large number of manuscripts, but rather a set of highly variable additions and continuations added onto the Short Text Version.
-
Interpolated Text Version = Short Text Version plus additional text blocks (see Interpolation).
-
Long Text Version = Short Text Version or Interpolated Text in which all text blocks have additional text.
-
Extended Text Version = Short, Interpolated, or Long Version that has been extended to a chronicle that continues after the life of Christ
Text Block = A small section of the Compendium's text, almost always describing a single person, with some exceptions. Usually associated with a node (see Node) these short texts are visually formatted as small "blocks" so as to fit into the Compendium's graphic structure
Textual co-transmission = Texts that appear together in the same manuscript (or on the same roll) as the Compendium
