XNavGraph: drawing rules - chigc/documentation GitHub Wiki
General aims and goals
- basic structure of an idealized version, close to Peter
- "canonic" version
- entry point for the whole edition (2nd, 3rd layer)
- simulate a roll rather than a codex
- the navGraph follows mostly Klosterneuburg (for horizontal alignments of the nodes and the connections between most modes) with some features of the Harvard/Cleveland rolls (most notably, the positioning of the prophets); these are representatives of Version 1 (see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1EYDvNLSeDNufmWcFu6R22rBXafHjR8MiSDSPER2Fzfo )
- in principle we should be able to tell that the structural variance is low anyway, when it comes to the basic graph and the group of manuscripts it is based upon. But then, we should be at least somewhat sure about this ...
- positioning of elements
- vertically: if possible, keep same distance for parent child relation (unless the horizontal correspondences require otherwise)
- which distance (in px)? It cannot be too little, because when a parent node has many descendants there needs to be space for the connections. This has to be discussed and decided calculating the necessary distance for the parent node with the highest number of children.
- horizontally: follow the correspondences given in Klosterneuburg, Augustiner-Chorherrenstift, Cod. 696, except for the following cases, which are adjusted according to historical reasons:
- Naason is on the same horizontal level as Aaron and Moses (cf. Auxerre 145)
- Efrom, Aram, Amminadab are above Aaron, Moses and Maria
- Salmon is on the same horizontal level as Josue (cf. Auxerre 145)
- The prophets are arranged according to the Cleveland roll
- Phul is on the same horizontal level as Manaen
- Johannes and Jhesus are on same horizontal level as Hester and Assuerus
- Jadus and Manasses are on same level as Alexander
- Eliud is on same horizontal level as Antiochus Magnus and Ptolomeus
- The Este box is shifted up so that Mathan corresponds to Antiochus, Pomepus and Scaurus fall between Mathan and Jacob and Julius Cesar corresponds with Joseph
- Heli and Jacob are on same horizontal level as Johannes Hyrcannus
- Julius Cesar and Cassius are on same horizontal level as Joseph and Alexander Rex
- Pontius Pilatus is on same horizontal level with Christus Passus and Christus Resurgens
- connections follow Klosterneuburg, Augustiner-Chorherrenstift, Cod. 696, except for the following cases
- The arrangement of Aaron's children follows Harvard Typ 216
- There is no center line between the two branches of the kings of syria
- Thamar is connected to Judas
- Antiochus Magnus is connected to Antiochus Epiphanes (cf. Harvard 216)
- Herodes Ascalonita is connected to his wives
- There is a connection between Herodes Antica and Herodias (cf. Harvard 216)
- vertically: if possible, keep same distance for parent child relation (unless the horizontal correspondences require otherwise)
- nodes
- node size: 3 sizes of nodes:
- biggest size for nodes starting ages (Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, David, Sedechias)
- intermediate size (double node where inner node is the same size as the small node) for nodes starting lines of kings (Jerobam, Bennadab, Phul, Merodach, Darius, Alexander, Julius Cesar), four christ nodes, hysmeria, anna
- smallest size for all other nodes
- node color: red
- node labels --> taken from superstructure
- color of node labels --> black for men, red for women
- node size: 3 sizes of nodes:
- connecting (center) lines
- parent-child connections: line connecting bottom of node to top of next
- spouse or concubine connections: line connecting side of node to side of node (EXCEPTION is the three husbands of Anna)
- lines showing the order of the reign of the kings of Syria: black line
- lines of Este square: black lines
- line between Anna and Hysmeria (sisters): black line
- thickness of lines: Linea christi as a thicker line (between the three Christ nodes resumes thin red line)
- color of lines: all red
- connecting (outer) lines
- priests: yellow
- judges: yellow
- kings, governors, emperors: blue
- texts
- 2 sizes:
- smaller size for texts describing a single biblical character
- larger size for "narrative" texts
- ?? how to build incipits
- ?? incipit color black/red
- ?? placement of text blocks around graph elements
- 2 sizes:
- structural labels
- Labels for lines of kings, emperors, governors, judges, priests, prophets, apostles, ages: red
- The following labels are not included as texts, but are represented visually through the type of connection: "uxor", "coniuges", "concubina", "liber/libera", "ancilla", "fratres", "sorores"
- diagram renderings
- Encampments, Tribes, Jerusalem modelled on Klosterneuburg
- 3 Arks based on Dublin 117 (cf. also Heidelberg Sal IX 40)
- color: same red as graph except for colored elements in tribes diagram
- relative size: reflects their size in the manuscripts (i.e., one node in the Tribes diagram = same size of node in the graph)
- labels and texts: included, similar to labels in nodes
- groups
- defined in superstructure
