XManscript Identifiers - chigc/documentation GitHub Wiki
Identifiers (internal signature and internal short sigla) were created in the Erfassungstabelle and incorporated into the TEI backbone files for each manuscript. Once created, identifiers shall never be changed again (that's the nature of identifiers)
Internal signature
- three letters composed of first letter of the city followed by initials for the library
- example, Paris Bibliothèque Nationale de France = pbr
- where there is repetition the next available letter from the library is taken
- example: Weimar Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek = wha, Wolfenbüttel Herzog August Bibliothek = whb
- these three letters are followed by the numbers from the manuscript signature, separated by hyphens
- example Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Lat. 297 = pbr-lat-297
Short sigla
- One letter for cities with the most important/the most manuscripts in that letter group
- Examples of cities with the most manuscripts in the letter group: London L, München M, Paris P, Wien W
- Examples of cities with "important manuscripts": Klosterneuburg K
- two letters for all other cities, "nach Gefühl"
- Example for cities starting with L: Lawrence La, Leiden Ln, Leipzig Le, Lilienfeld Lf, Lindau Li, Linz Lz, Liverpool Lv, London L, Lüneburg Lü, Lyon Ly
- no number for the first manuscript in each city
- increasing numbers for all other manuscripts in that letter group. Starting with the oldest / most important mss.
- when dating is the same for a number of manuscripts, "short" version manuscripts or other "important" manuscripts are given lower numbers: example Paris Latin 14435 is given sigla P as it is cited by Moore and the source of the title Compendium historiae, although other Parisian mss are dated to the thirteenth century
- fragments and lost manuscripts are given higher numbers
- Consequence: manuscripts found later (after we assigned the sigla, 19 June 2024) will have higher numbers
