Are you a student interested in pursuing a PhD in the Biomedical Engineering program? If so, check out this quick guide.
Before anything else, you will need to have a contact professor from the program who supports you in the process. You will need a letter of support for pre-registration signed by them.
The calendar for access, admission, and enrollment at UPM, as well as the official regulations, can be found at: π Official PhD Information β UPM π Admission and Enrollment β ETSIT UPM
Here is a summary of the most important terms you should know for the pre-registration and admission process to the PhD program:
Term | What does it mean? |
---|---|
Pre-registration | Formal application to start PhD studies. Done online in Helios. |
Admission | Approval by the academic committee of the program (CAPD) for your entry into the PhD program. |
Pre-admission | Early approval to manage visas, scholarships, or other procedures, before final admission. |
Part-time admission | Mode designed for those balancing studies with work. |
Supplementary training | Additional subjects you must take before your official PhD time starts. Depends on your previous education. |
Conditional admission | Allows you to start the admission process even if you do not yet have a master's degree (useful when master's programs end in September). |
Admission with effects | Allows you to start the admission process even if you do not yet have a master's degree (useful when master's programs end in September). |
- Applications via Helios: according to the official UPM calendar.
- ποΈ Until early July: publication of the provisional admission list (including pre-admitted and part-time candidates, if applicable).
- β³ 5 working days to submit appeals.
- π Before the end of July: publication of the final admission list.
- π Official start of doctoral studies: October (unless the student is required to complete additional coursework).
Students may be admitted outside the regular period, provided there are available spots and the following conditions are met:
- ποΈ Admission effective as of October 1st:
- Applications submitted before December 31st.
- ποΈ Admission effective as of March 1st:
- Applications submitted between January 1st and June 30th.
In both cases, the student must be able to follow the academic activities normally, and the application must be approved by the CAPD in an official meeting.
- A pre-admission only indicates that you meet the basic requirements, but does not guarantee a spot in the program. It is useful for scholarship or visa applications.
-
Conditional admission allows you to begin the process even if you have not yet received your official Masterβs degree. Once obtained, you must submit proof by emailing
[email protected]
to proceed with the self-enrolment. - The official start date indicated in your admission letter (October 1st or March 1st) marks the beginning of your doctoral time count.
As mentioned earlier, you will need a letter of support for pre-admission, signed by a faculty member from the program, in order to request official admission.
This letter is a mandatory requirement to be accepted into the doctoral program.
The signed letter must be uploaded to the Helios UPM application platform.
1οΈβ£ Contact your potential supervisor so they can download β¬οΈ and unzip the file admission.zip
.
2οΈβ£ Your supervisor must complete and sign the form π.
3οΈβ£ Upload the signed document to the Helios UPM pre-admission platform.
